Tom Delay Fights to Save His Own Life
If there are Republicans questioning the choice of Tom Delay to spearhead the “save Terri Shiavo” campaign, I haven’t heard them. I haven’t heard them because there aren’t any. In typical take-one-for-the-team fashion, Republicans have thrown a political life-vest to the man closest to drowning: Tom Delay.
As Delay frantically tries to wipe the ethics pooh off his Texas boots, the life of Terri Schiavo has become the worst of all things: a much-needed political boost. Even as he pontificates about affirming life, and doing what’s right, the smell of hypocrisy hangs over him like a buzzing, blinking fluorescent fixture outside a sleazy hotel.
This family’s lingering tragedy has given Tom Delay an opportunity to reach out to his constituency – people whose belief in ‘life’ supersedes all other beliefs. Including democracy’s traditional practice that government has no place in private family decisions. This constituency is an important one in conservative circles, and Republicans are undoubtedly getting nervous about Mr. Delay’s ethical troubles. New questions arise daily as information comes to light. But just in the nick of time, Terri Schiavo provides a perfect political platform, and Tom Delay initiates self-resurrection. The media replays the desperately choreographed action.
And there can be no doubt that he’s in trouble. In Mr. Delay’s political life, there are not just questions, but layer upon layer of questions. There’s electoral monkey business, the redistricting power-grab, fundraising issues, greasy business associates, disregard for the law, and most disturbing to me personally, the growing belief among prominent Republicans that the American public no longer has the will to stand against the tide. Even as Republicans change Congressional ethics rules, and remove committee members that may take issue with Tom Delay’s actions. Not to worry. In the new America, to question the government is not patriotic.
For the Republican Party to allow Tom Delay to be their spokesperson on the Terri Schiavo issue, preaching on personal ethics and moral authority, is both laughable and tragic. If this works out well for Tom Delay, I can foresee a Ken Lay “Financial Responsibility” speaking tour.
But there are larger issues, too. Is this what Republicans mean by “smaller government?” Does the new Republican philosophy mean, “We’ll stay out of your life unless your belief system differs from ours?” Maybe so. And that’s where we start to become something other than America.
If there are still people who believe that patriotism means love of country, not love of your party or candidate - if there are still people who have not been completely cowed by the professional fear-mongering of the last 4 years – if there are still people who believe that the government is responsible TO US, and not the other way around – I strongly suggest that you stand up and let yourself be heard. Because the times, they are a changin’.

Congress passed the Palm Sunday Compromise Bill. President Bush signed the bill at 1:11 a.m. What this does is effectively moved the Terri Schiavo case from the Florida courts to Federal courts. Bush and Congress made a similar move with tort reform.... Read More

Here's the link to the story of the "Republican Nine" who stood with the Democrats in the Florida House to save the Florida Death with Dignity Law this week.
As a Native Floridian, I'm grateful to know that there are some on the other side of the aisle who take their Christianity seriously, and who are actually able to resist the temptation of letting Jeb and George tell them what Jesus would do.
I might have to make use of that law someday myself, and I don't want a Republican political stunt to take that right away from me.

madame defarge- did you notice on that CBS link that the picture of Terry Schiavo was labelled as being Zacarias Moussaoui? Large Oops there.

The Terri Schiavo Case
Schiavo: 'Come down, President Bush'
By WILLIAM R. LEVESQUE, Times Staff Writer
Published March 20, 2005
PINELLAS PARK - Angered by the latest political developments in Washington, Michael Schiavo said Saturday that it isn't just the Florida governor who should visit his wife to learn about the case.
Jeb Bush's brother, President Bush, should visit Terri Schiavo, too, he said.
"Come down, President Bush," Schiavo said in a telephone interview. "Come talk to me. Meet my wife. Talk to my wife and see if you get an answer. Ask her to lift her arm to shake your hand. She won't do it."
She won't, Schiavo said, because she can't.
He made a similar offer to the governor last week, saying lawmakers interferring in his wife's life know nothing about the case. So far, Gov. Bush hasn't responded to the offer.
President Bush has indicated he will sign any federal legislation to keep Terri Schiavo alive.
Weary after an emotional visit with his wife, Schiavo said he is astonished that politicians want to interfere in such a private matter.
"Instead of worrying about my wife, who was granted her wishes by the state courts the past seven years, they should worry about the pedophiles killing young girls," Schiavo said, referring to a local case. "Why doesn't Congress worry about people not having health insurance? Or the budget? Let's talk about all the children who don't have homes."
He said U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who is leading a charge to extend Terri Schiavo's life, is a "little slithering snake" pandering for votes.
"To make comments that Terri would want to live, how do they know?" Schiavo said of the members of Congress who want to keep his wife alive.
"Have they ever met her?" Schiavo said. "What color are her eyes? What's her middle name? What's her favorite color? They don't have any clue who Terri is. They should all be ashamed of themselves."
Schiavo said he was going to stay at his wife's side through the entire ordeal and said he wouldn't back down in his fight to have her wishes carried out.
"Terri died 15 years ago," Schiavo said, referring to the collapse and cardiac arrest that doctors say virtually destroyed her brain. "It's time for her to be with the Lord like she wanted to be."

Here is my message..
Tell Congress to get out of the Terri Schiavo case. The woman has been brain-dead for fifteen years.
Her husband has signed the release. The doctors have signed the release. The courts have signed the release.
To have Tom DeLay involved is sickening as he is the most immoral of all the Republicans.
Tell him to quit using this poor women and abusing her husband for his own political gains.
Does this mean everyone now has access to all the medical care needed for any problem?
Or just those whom the Republicans can use for their own advantage?
Thank you?

My letter sent to the list:
I am so ashamed to be an American today. The actions taken by our government to interfere with the life and death of Terri Schiavo and her husband, who by the sanctity of marriage is her guardian, are beyond belief. If this government – including the President and the Governor of Florida – was so damn concerned about Terri’s life, they would have accepted Mr. Schiavo’s invitation to come meet his wife and make a determination of her condition for themselves, since they feel they are obviously much more qualified to determine her medical condition than countless doctors and numerous advanced technological tests.
Let this woman complete her death that started 15 years ago with the dignity she deserves.

Am I not allowed to die? I can't hear and though my eyes are open I can't see. Is the Congress more powerful than God? Great letters battlebob and madame. This case is so ridiculous. Michael Schiavo's comments are extremely truthful. The Repubs need to focus on the real issues facing our society and not using what's left of his wife as a poltical tool to score points with their rabid far right constituents. I saw some of the press conference held by the House Dems and I agree with what Florida congresswoman (Deborah Wasserman?) said. She told reporters that she doesn't believe Congress is qualified to determine the status of Schiavo and has no business being involved in this decision. She was like she doesn't have a medical background and is not comfortable being involved with this process. I agree with her 100 percent. And any doctor that comes in now and claims Ms. Schiavo's brain isn't pure liquid should be tossed out of the profession and a background check should be conducted on his political donation habits. Of course Frist is all up in this too and he's a doctor, but his opinion is worthless. He apparently thinks you can get HIV by shaking hands.
Honestly, I kinda hope Ms. Schiavo's tube feeding is reinstated soon. If it isn't, she could die on Easter Weekend and that would fire this base up to even scarier levels. They'll make this poor woman into the Second Coming, no doubt.
It was interesting listening to C-Span callers today. There were some Repubs calling in saying they did not like Congress being involved in this and one even wondered about how much of a weight her medical costs were on the system. Spoken like a true Republican. I agree with Linda E., the Florida Republican who said Ms. Schiavo has been kept to long from her Lord, was well said, however, and I'm thankfully no afterlife expert, she could already be with him for all we know.
I'm curious which federal judge will be assigned to this case. If he or she overturns the verdicts of all the Florida state courts and is out of step with the Supreme Court, which rightly chose not to hear this case, then I think a background check should be done on them as well to determine if they're Shrub Pioneers or DeLay Hot Tubbers.
just like they told McCarthy-
"Have you left no sense of decency????"
I carry my living will at all times & have done so since 1994. Seeing poor Terri on TV scared me to death. Now the very people I pay to make sure I have life, liberty & the pursuit to happiness are scaring me to death.
