More Healing from Polly
The latest installment in our series to heal the politically lame… God knows they need it.
Dear Polly:
Recently I heard about the Darby CD photos and videos of Abu Ghraib torture that the Bush administration is refusing to release. Reportedly these photos and videos document the torture of Iraqi citizens by the U.S. military… My husband and I have never really discussed politics, but last week he was reading the newspaper and suddenly said, “I don’t know why everybody’s so worried about torturing these people… who cares?” Well, I almost fell out of my chair…I am of the opinion that the U.S. should always maintain a higher standard of human dignity, even in war. I won’t go into the details, but I can tell you that our conversation did not go well, and we ended up in a huge fight. He became absolutely furious, called me an idiot, and now he hasn’t spoken to me for a week…our house is like a mausoleum. I won’t apologize for my opinion, but I feel like I should try to smooth the waters. I know you are an expert in these things. Any ideas?
Sad Lady in Memphis
Dear SLIM:
That’s a tough one… I am an expert in that I too was married to a man whose political opinions differed widely from my own. Most of the time we were able to avoid discussing these issues, but like you, there were times when I just had to say my piece. And the results were much the same as you reported in your letter… So, here is the best advice I can give you.
First of all, you should be getting involved in politics on some level. Run for City Council or some other local office, or just start showing up at the party office of your choice and make phone calls or stuff envelopes. If it grows into a deeper involvement, that would be a wonderful thing. In any case, find a way to express your beliefs.
As far as the relationship goes, you have some options in this situation.
Option One (Threat Level Yellow): Apologize to your husband, pretend you hadn’t given a moment’s thought to your ill-conceived opinion, tell him he’s brilliant, make his favorite dinner, sexually assault him, and smile continuously at him for about 3 days. This will make him forget the whole thing. The bad news is you will be lying to both of you, which bothers some people. It’s worth noting that lying doesn’t bother everyone, so you may be able to live with this option. It’s your call.
Option Two (Threat Level Orange): Ask him to sit down and have a real discussion with you. It helps to have resources to back up your opinion. Tell him you’re not trying to change his mind, but that you want him to understand why you hold the opinions you do. Ask him to do the same. Now, bear in mind that this approach carries risks. For instance, if he consistently watches only Fox News, he won’t be able to back up any of his opinions. He’ll just announce them as fact. You can hit the wall here, in which case you’ll end up in the same boat you are now. If this happens, you may have to revert back to Option One. But it’s worth the risk if you’re the honest type.
Option Three (Threat Level Red): Dump his sorry ass. This will be a major transition for you, but sometimes you just have to stand up for yourself. Find someone with whom your beliefs are more closely aligned. Again – your call.
“Simpatico,” SLIM – that’s what they call it when someone is just… right for where you’re at. And it’s a beautiful thing, believe me. I have learned that one is never too old to be surprised by life and love.
So… the bottom line is this.
You can keep walking your current path. Tell your husband you’re sorry, go back to the way things were. If that will make you happy, then please do so with my blessing.
Or, you can have faith in yourself, take a chance, and go out into the world for a new adventure.
Life, like politics, is all about choices… whatever you choose, I’ll be here for you.
Your friend,
Polly

Sad Lady
You sleep with this guy (who thinks torture is no big deal)?!
Polly,
Right now we have reached option three. Time to dump Bu$hco. Not only will America be happy, but so will the rest of the world.
SLIM,
This is for you:
TELL CONGRESS THE PRESIDENT HAS NO RIGHT OF TORTURE
There is a strong bipartisan move afoot in Congress to limit the power of the president to torture detainees in our name, specifically to bar the U.S. Military from engaging in "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment". Does it surprise anyone that this out of control administration is threatening to VETO the whole defense bill if can't continue to commit war crimes? If we do not speak out they are our crimes as well. Why don't you tell your members of Congress to stand tall and stand together?

Cheney Lobbying Against Anti-Torture Legislation
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/072305A.shtml
The Bush administration has been lobbying to block legislation that would bar the US military from engaging in "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment" of detainees, hiding prisoners from the Red Cross, and using interrogation methods not authorized by a new Army field manual.
Chuck in Houston:
Well, as my family is still out of town I went down to that DSM thing at the Unitarian Church on Fanin (close to downtown) to see what it looked like. It was organized, I think, by something called the Progressive Action Alliance and Pacifica Radio had a big presence. Once underway, there must have been 600-900 people there, as there seemed to be no empty seats and ech row had about thirty seats and twenty to thirty roads (not terrible scientific, but that's my guestimate). Each seat had a Lyndon LaRouche newspaper and some sort of socialist newspaper (I think) on it, and I'd have to say that the cross-section demographically was pretty narrow and pretty left. I guess I looked a little funny their in a starched white shirt (literally) and slacks and black shoes. They had music -- Simon and Garfunkel/Give PEace a Chance type, so the event was fairly, how to say it, earnest. In general, the event was more generally anti-war and anti-Bush per se than focused on the truly stunning implications of the DSMs (I downloaded them and read them from that site posted on the prior thread, plus I downloaded the time-line, which is really quite good, plus I printed out my copy of the Constitution -- more on that below). Anyway--I'll post another part in a bit on the key-note speaker.

We have the same crowd, but they will vote, noses plugged, when push comes to shove. In my case, it was conspiracy theorists & I did see Larouchies. Who funds those anyway? Ya gotta wonder! They are almost as wierd as Church of Scientology.
Chuck in Houston with more on the Houston DSM meeting:
So, once the music stopped, they played part of a movie called "Uncovered," which seemed to be a pretty interesting documentary (and they recommended something like "Dar Jamaal" or something like that -- I guess I'll go check Blockbuster since I own the remote for another week or so). They also passed out a sample letter or postcard to use to write to your congressman requesting that they co-sponsor the Resolution of Inquiry introduced on July 21 by Representative Barbara Lee to require the White House and the State Department to "transmit all information relating to communication with officials of the United Kingdom between January 1, 2002 and October 16, 2002, relating to the policy of the United States with REspect to Iraq."
My fingers are tired so I'll do another post for the keynote speaker -- former Army COlonel and diplomat Ann Wright.
Chuck in Houston
DiAnne:
Check out Amy's post on the last thread -- it looks like Clark County achieve something more like a cross-over! 45 is alot for Vancouver too, I would say. I wonder if there were more than one down there.

Resort To Fear

The resort to fear by systems of power to discipline the domestic population has left a long and terrible trail of bloodshed and suffering which we ignore at our peril. Recent history provides many shocking illustrations.

Chuck,
We met Ann Wright here in DC at the Conyers' hearings--she is one powerful lady! She knows of the DCP too.
I am so glad to read these reports--it means the DCP is well represented, but it also means that we are all working together to get the truth out there.
Chuck in Houston with a final installment (if my fingers hold out):
So Ann Wright was the keynote. Originally from Arkansas, she was in the Army back when it was the Women's Army Corps or something like that (I think -- yeah, I guest that's the WAC's) and retired as a Colonel and then got in the the diplomatic corps for 20-30 years after that. She was stationed at the Mongolian Embassy just as we were about to invade Iraq and sent her retirement letter to Powell in protest -- said she could not in good conscience support the party line any more. Long and interesting talk -- and quite radical for someone of that background. Urged visible protests as a tactic (sort of non-stop vigils, I think). Interesting points included the extent to which careeer diplomatic folks are upset by the whole thing -- and were from the start (not at all surprising to me), more interestingly, the adjutent generals of the four branches requested that the Pentagon, I guess, flange-up our commitment to Geneva Convention type practices, and they were rebuffed. Talked about Green-card recruiting and also about a talk she gave at the Honolulu Army Base (Fort Stockton, is it? I forget), at which she was invited to speak on the anniverary of the WAC's or something like that. The interesting part of that story was that when they invited her, she cautioned that she stongly opposes to war, and that did not seem to bother anyone there -- all the way up to a two-star level. The moral being that the US military can't speak out, or many would, so we have to be their voice. I don't want to suggest that she suggested that the folks in the hall were widly enthusiatic about her anti-war message; her point was that just the fact that they wee forewarned, invited her anyway, and listened respectfully is telling. Fingers tire, one more to go.
Chuck in Houston
Karen:
I do which I hadn't been the only startched-white shirt in there though.
Chuck in Houston
Oops -- "which" = "wish" in above. Tired fingers.
Chuck in Houston
Just checking in, Karen. It was good to see both of you.
To correct what was said about my election reform efforts today, important to know that a paper trail (for electronic voting) is not enough and meaningless. Here in NY, as per current legislation, the trail required is only 3% of votes, nothing requires an audit, no one will see it, and it doesn't have to match. We want paper ballot and precinct based optical scanners. The vote is checked before it is cast, and can be recounted same day. Both technologies are currently allowed for purchase.
PBOS is the movement around the country. Somewhere in the forum is a few months old posting.
Chuck in Houston with the final final installment:
Anyway, there were lots of questions and the show went on for about two-hours all told. Toward the end, different sorts of organizations got up and made announcements, including Pacifica Radio. One guy was pushing this organization called "Impeach Bush" I think. He had a great bumper sticker -- very Red, White and Blue and very Old Gloryish and on the top is said in bold letters "Support our Troops" and on the bottom, equally bold, "Impeach Bush."

Dear Sweet Ms Polly -
Another option for Slim:
Dump the significant other, move, rescue a cat from the local humane society so she has someone who loves her unconditionally for the soft-hearted compassionate person she is - and then follow through with the rest of your advice with finding like-minded people... and maybe add internet searches and blogging to her life while making the transition to full personal autonomy when she finds out how freeing it is to be away from an oppressive relationship. She needs to be able to express herself without censure or ridicule.
No sane woman (or man) has to put up with a significant other who calls them an "idiot" just because their significant other has a different opinion. Ever. That's verbal abuse....
Slim sounds like a wonderfully compassionate human being who just can't abide the idea that torture is being committed in her name (as well as ours) and she knows that torture is encouraged, approved of, and condoned by the "leader" of our country (albeit he was given the office the first time and likely the second time the election was stolen). The moron who called her an idiot can't know what he's lost until she's out of his life. Kind people with compassionate hearts must be treasured more than gold.
Like Slim, I want those Darby photos released and I want them all to be shown to the people of this country on prime time MSM TV. All of the photos. Do I want to see the photos? No. The ones that we've already seen made me physically sick to my stomach to see. The thought of seeing even more photos of people being tortured brings tears to my eyes typing this. Torture photos represent the most degrading and humiliating aspect of being an American nowadays: the photos signify how low this country has become under the current "leadership" since the Selection of 2000, and how hypocritical the "leader" of this country, and his cabal, are.... and by implication, so are the people who support them and continue to apologize for them (McCain comes to mind - he was maligned by Rovian tactics, yet stood up at the RNC and gave a speech in favor of Bu$hCo, complete with abasing body language; I was embarrassed for him, and haven't liked him since). The rest of the world thinks all Americans condone torture, thanks to pResiNitwit and his cabal; we know better, but we live here and know who our friends are and who our enemies from within are, too. I suspect Slim is just as upset about that as you and I and the rest of the bloggers here are....
Having ethical and moral standards that do not condone torture and abuse does not mean one has to also be a doormat and put up with being called names by someone who sounds like he's verbally and emotionally and mentally abusive.....
Chuck
We did have some angry, angry people who kept shouting out during McDermott's speech but he's used to that. People were shouting things like "treason!" "impeach!" "25,000 dead!" - they weren't shouting at him - some are just at a boiling point, I think.
I went to Left Bank Books to get a bumper sticker that I'd seen there but they were gone - it said simply:
DOWNING

It's the simplest and cheapest way to go, and every legislator should be in favor of saving money nowadays!!! Paper ballots with optical scanners are used locally, and unless there are a bunch of referendums on the ballot, carefully filling in the little ovals with black felt tip pen on the paper ballot only takes a bare few minutes, pop it in the slot for the optical scan, the paper ballots stay inside the optical scan machine until the end of the day when precinct workers collect them and save them in case a re-count is needed (I happen to know the paper ballots all go in boxes and are stored for several years), get the "I voted" sticker... and walk out the door smiling....!
It's so simple! I hope you all get the same simple way of voting that can be re-counted if an election is close and contested.... It's oddly satisfying, and gives one a mental feeling of security to know one's vote is counted either with the optical scan or by a hand counted paper ballot if necessary....
Good Luck, Marjorie!!! :-)

Problem is that the fix has been in for so long, we need to be clever to defeat the DREs. Just like the laws slightly changed over 10 years to give Katherine Harris the power she needed in 2000. We have lobbyists priming the pump for years, and commissioners and boards waiting for this moment to deliver evoting. For profit as well as GOP power. Sequoia has had the contract for years, and it's been purchased by a Venezuelan company using old lottery parts. Think they were responsible for the bad election down there. So much has been put in place in many states that November's results can't affect what should be obvious change in dynamics.
Karen, I might be in DC either next weekend or the one after. I want to do some more sightseeing and since my son has an apartment there I might as well take advantage of it. I'll let you know what's up when I decide which weekend it will be. If you and Dick are free maybe I can treat you to dinner.
BTW, Cheney was here yesterday at a fundraiser for Doug Forrester(Corzine's opponent for Governor). I can't believe that dirt bag was actually spitting distance from my house!!! About a 150-200 of us showed up to protest Friday afternoon. "1 2 3 4 kick Cheney out the door, 5 6 7 8 we don't want you in our state!" LOL! Lots of thumbs up and horn honks from people driving past us. Pretty stupid move on Forrester's part actually. 200 people came to the fundraiser but this is Blue NJ and Bush/Cheney are not popular folks here. The visit will probably cost him another 5% in the polls, moron.

One conspiracy guy gave me his 'zine & it's quite paranoia-inducing (on the subject of voting). This will make your skin crawl.
He claims Diebold, ES&S & Sequoia all have Bush connections. Supposedly, O'Dell of Diebold is a top Bush fundraiser. Then Sequoia is owned by a partner-member of the Carlyle Group, affiliated with Bush's father. Then Diebold's Election Division has been headed by Bob Urosevich, whose brother Todd is a top exec at ES&S. The brothers were allegedly financially staked by Howard Ahmanson, primary "bagman" for the Christian Reconstruction movement, who advocate theocracy. Ahmanson allegedly belonged, in the '80s, to the Council for National Policy (which included Ollie North, Klan member Richard Shoff etc). HF Ahmanson & Company supposedly had over $47 billion in asssets as of 1997 and have been on a crusade to defeat evolution since. They reportedly gave Seattle-based Discovery Institute 1.5 million to "unseat not just Darwinism but also Darwinism's cultural legacy." This was reported by Max Blumenthal in Salon.com & by Reeason magazine. Ahmanson (from his own website) is the chief contributor to the Chalcedon Institue that fully supports the philosophy of Christian reconstruction and advocates "mandating the death penalty for homosexuals and drunkards." These may be some loose connections but these guys are convinced.
NMP
Not so wild, after all we've learned. I do believe that across the board are GOP, religious strategists and money people who are willing to use eachother in an ends justifies the means. That means for both the corporate and Christian pay-off. Most of the voters are clueless just how dangerous the underpinnings and results of all this unholy alliance.
Marjorie G
This is their double creepy website:

It is mind-boggling that such people have infiltrated government, to some degree. Now I shall have "Handmaid's Tale" nightmares.

What propaganda. How 9/11 the Iraqi election made an ex-leftie turn to this movement. Yikes.

Check this out (same website):
The homosexual phenomenon is thus the moral and social culmination of the perverse disintegration of a culture in the direction of spiritual, intellectual and moral deconstruction. Thus the homosexualisation of a given society is not simply the sum of its individual perversions. This is not just an individual and personal phenomenon. The very texture of society is changed. That is why the homosexual phenomenon is often associated with the destruction of the creational structures of the family: loss by parents of the sense of their sexual identity; abandonment by the husband of his role of head of his wife (the feminization of men); the aggressive dominating masculinization of the wife and mother, a parody of masculinity which is the true character of what has wrongly been termed the “feminist” movement.
Marjorie G. and NMP:
That is the conclusion I have come to also. How else could they be willing to tolerate each other?
If each faction was pure and standing alone, they would be polar opposites. It's about power. If they are able to maintain power, sooner or later one will have to go. Money speaks louder than bibles in most cases, and the Imperialists will dump the R's once they get their power cinched.
Dang, this is far better than a spy thriller movie. No wonder I don't watch t.v. or read fiction any more.

NMP,
Kind of makes me laugh. To think of a year ago when I first started coming to the JK/JE blog. I was jumping up and down, up and down, saying "They are USING the Christians". Like everyone there probably already knew that, but I was just sure I was the only person who could see it. LOL.

Well I think it was going on for a long time but many of us didn't realize the enormity. In this part of the country, there was quite a bit of awareness about people like Falwell & Pat Robertson, because they were pretty active at promoting and pushing their belief systems & trying to get them into law.
The ones I read about tonight seem to want to go back to the times before the Enlightenment, like around 400 AD is when they seemed to think things were ideal.

Illuminating Video Interview
If any one is interested in a story that TREMENDOUSLY lends itself to the Downing Street Minutes story, let me know and I will be happy to send you a 30minute interview of a former Pentagon official who witnessed firsthand how Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Cheney, (and the neoconservatives) knowingly and deliberately created false intelligence to support their pre-existing plans to go to war. The footage was shot about 2 years ago, yet it is completely in sync with the revelations of the Downing Street Memo, Richard Clarke's story (that the administration was looking for war rationals immediately after 9/11) and so many other facts.
The video footage is from a film I purchased, titled "Hijacking Catastrophe" and the interview is with Karen Kwiatkowski. The film was released almost 2 years ago and only appeared in a few small theatres. I was fortunate to live in the only town in the state of Washington that hosted the film, and by mere chance I stumbled across the film, then bought a copy.
I spoke with the production company and the producers gave me the okay to distribute "Fair Use" copies of the interview, at no charge. If you are interested please let me know and I will send you a CD-ROM of the video ASAP. I'll even pay the shipping costs.
This story needs to be heard...
To my knowledge Karen Kwiatkowski's story has received little to no press attention, except an article in Salon a long time ago. Following is a except from the Salon article (which I copied from the "Timeline 1" link on afterdowningstreet.org)
I STRONGLY recommend everyone watch this video, here is a quick glimpse of some of what Karen talks about in her interview:
May 2002 Karen Kwiatkowski says:
"From May 2002 until February 2003, I observed firsthand the formation of the Pentagon's Office of Special Plans and watched the latter stages of the neoconservative capture of the policy-intelligence nexus in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq... I saw a narrow and deeply flawed policy favored by some executive appointees in the Pentagon used to manipulate and pressurize the traditional relationship between policymakers in the Pentagon and U.S. intelligence agencies. I witnessed neoconservative agenda bearers within OSP usurp measured and carefully considered assessments, and through suppression and distortion of intelligence analysis promulgate what were in fact falsehoods to both Congress and the executive office of the president. (Salon)
PS The production company is interested in putting the video online, but they do not have the resources to do so. Does anyone know of a website or someone who might be willing to host the interview online? If so, please contact me soon. I am awaiting a reply from the folks at this site (afterdowningstreet.org), but figure that the more sites we can get this video on the better. Thanks. Please contact me with any ideas or contacts.

And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry.
Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded with patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader, and gladly so.
How do I know?
For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar.
If Americans knew what is being done in their name in Iraq, the people murdered, tortured, maimed and raped.....there would be no need for impeachment. President Bush would be forced to resign by sheer public horror.
Conservative Religious movements draw power by demonizing their opponent(s), and willingness of followers to join in the hysteria. The movement snowballs and gains speed as smaller groups join in, if they do not join they become fair game. If they join in, they share in the spoils.
These movements count on the passivity of people not directly involved. When passivity ends, the movement ends.
In these times, a true Patriot stands to question leadership and motives. Government no longer operates for the good of the nation but to protect and increase its power.
It is our obligation to question. If Valour and Honor is lacking, Government must be removed.
End the Madness, question your government.
