Harriet Miers Withdraws

The Republicans eat their young...

From MSNBC:

WASHINGTON - Confronted with criticism from both liberals and conservatives, Harriet Miers on Thursday withdrew her nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In a statement, President Bush said he “reluctantly accepted” her decision to withdraw, after weeks of insisting that he did not want her to step down.

Here's the nonsense part:

Bush blamed her withdrawal on calls in the Senate for the release of internal White House documents that the administration has insisted were protected by executive privilege.

She was Bush's lawyer for crying out loud. What, as White House counsel she didn't foresee this? That alone would have made her supremely unqualified for the job.

Nope, Harriet Miers withdrew because the wingnuts weren't happy. Opposition groups began running commercials against her. CWA came out against her. Dobson and Bauers were going to have to testify during the hearings.

There was no way that the right wing was going to disclose the depths of how far they can reach into the White House. And that spelled the end of Harriet Miers.

Now what lunatic are they going to propose - will have to be someone the religious right are comfortable with? Every day it's a new surprise .. for them, for us. I suppose this time they'll have to pick an actual judge.

I'm glad Ms. Miers threw in the towel. The nomination was so inappropriate! And though the RWA screamed bloody-murder for a anti-choice justice, I myself screamed for someone who didn't have to hide the last 20 years of her life and the pResident life from the confirmation process.

That was the first sign...a president and administration who might be indicted and so many Republicans in leadership positions indicted or under investigation, and he wanted to put another partison lackey in a life-long appointment.

But the fight will now rage on. Though I know many people are focused on the abortion issue; I know there are so many more issues in which this person MUST be moderate: civil rights, environment, republican crime and corruption trials, and so many more.

The situation in Florida is dire, they ain't reporting it.

Raw reporter, in hurricane zone, says situation extremely dire
Larisa Alexandrovna

WEST PALM BEACH -- Many residents of Broward County, Florida remain without food, water or medical supplies days after being pummeled by a stronger-than-expected Hurricane Wilma.

RAW STORY's Larisa Alexandrovna, who lives in the county, said the situation is far worse than the mainstream press is reporting. She believes part of this is due to the fact that residents are without phone service and largely unable to reach the outside world.

"There is no food," Alexandrovna said. "The Salvation Army said that they would provide some dinners for people, but aside from the Salvation Army" there is little aid.

Calling into RAW STORY from a payphone at the West Palm Beach airport, since home and cell phone service have been adversely affected, Larisa explained, "We can't call out. No one's covering this because they think if there were problems people would call, but we can't."

"There are a lot of elderly people who can't call 911," she added.

Alexandrovna noted that the hurricane devastated her parents' retirement community.

"My parents live in a retirement community and the roof of their building was ripped off," she said. "Cars were thrown around. They have no electricity, no phone, and no one has come to help them. The police haven't come to help them."

FEMA has arrived on scene in some locations but has scant supplies. In many areas, supplies have run out. One FEMA representative told Floridians on a local radio station that they should call in or file requests online. Alexandrovna said she found the statement absurd because so many were without power and phone service.

According to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, at least one water distribution site in Miami-Dade was out of supplies, and several other FEMA sites were running low on aid.

Hurricane-hit locals can buy supplies -- which are being rationed -- from local merchants.

But "they only take cash," Alexandrovna averred. "If you don't have any cash, you're screwed. If you're poor, you're screwed."

Residents are now without fresh water in many locations because sewage has tainted the supply.

One police officer from Plantation, who asked that his name not be used, said that police have direct orders to guard gas stations and stores. The claim jibes with a report in the Sun-Sentinel which stated that police were guarding gas stations.

"They're not guiding traffic, and they're not picking up debris on the road," Alexandrovna remarked. "There is one car accident after another because there's nobody [to clear roads]." An Associated Press report indicated police were directing traffic in some parts of Broward County.

Those who depend on medicine to survive are also hard-up. Alexandrovna found one woman sitting outside a local Walgreens crying. The woman was seeking insulin for her diabetes.

Tracy Christmas, of Tamarac, told of being sent to a location for water, where she stood in line for about six hours. The Salvation Army arrived with limited supplies; there was only enough for a few people in the front and those waiting empty-handed were told to go home.

Because the phones are down and relief has yet to arrive, Alexandrovna emphasized that the gravity of the crisis remains unknown.

"I know people aren't drowning here, but we don't know how many people are dead because nobody's bothered to check," she said. "They're stuck in their homes."

In the absence of federal and local authorities, she called on those near to the hurricane-hit zone to stock up on food and water and bring relief themselves.

"Tell people to get in their cars and pile them up with water and get down there," she said.

"On top of water, we need ice, because during the day it gets hot, and at night it's gotten really, really cold," she added. "You're talking about elderly who don't have heat, who don't have water."

My take is that after tomorrow's indictments, Bush's position will be compromised. Who knows what will be possible at that point?

After Rove and Libby are implicated, and by extension, both the President and the Vice-President, the allegedly "moderate" Senators in the GOP will have a choice. Do they urge Bush to nominate a consensus candiate who will have strong Democratic support?

If Bush goes hard right with the next selection in order to appease his base, do they use his terrible poll numbers, and the growing perception of corruption and incompetence that engulfs this Administration, as justification for resisting a divisive candidate?

Or do they knuckle under, and allow a President whose reputation is likely to be in tatters by 2008, to further polarize the nation?

Ms Miers has hit the headlines abroad too, and we saw a looonnng report on TV about the vigils yesterday night with an interview of Cindy Sheehan.
The scandals linked to the WH are hinted at regularly, but in my opinion the media are waiting for indictments before reporting in depth about it, as many names besides Rove and Cheney, don't mean a thing over the pond.

Times are changing and all I can wish you is all the best in your fight for a better future and a peaceful country.

Bush in office in 2008. There is two ways it will go. Either we win back the house and senate next year and the impeachment and investigations begin

OR they rig 2006 AGAIN so there is no chance in hell of us taking control. Even if we get more votes OBVIOUSLY that does not matter.

SO. we have a choice of battlefronts but there is only one fight. We MUST get bush out of the White House by any means nessecary before he kills any more.

I understand we are here as political allies with an intent of determining our path but these next few days will deliver us one of two things. We will either have Fitzgerald deliver us from evil or we will have to figure out how to literally wrest the hands of a madman from the helm. We will have to TAKE IT from them.

We came together as patriots. And they are leaving us little choice but to deliver unto them a REVOLUTION.

They WILL rig it in 2006. They won't just NOT use such power.

They will never just give it all back.

I think we should start a SERIOUS discussion about election night 2006. When that election night comes, the time for talk will be beyond us.

It is time to have a plan.

Actually, it is time to start fighting for it as RABIDLY as they do. We really have no choice.

Even if Fitzgerald CAN take down bush, we will still be at the mercy of his enablers.

Of course he did. Can't have the entire nation understand that neocons didn't want a Christian pro-life justice. After all, the whole thing was supposed to be the radical left ending up beating poor Ms. Miers nomination to death. Since the neocons turned on her, Dobson and Robertson see how much power they really have with the neocons. Zipp. (I have been providing courtesy play-by-play detailed narration for all this to RR acquaintences.)

The part where Bush whines about release of papers makes no sense. There have been demands for papers for every major situation & many nominations since the regime took power. Usually they act haughty about "making a stand" & make a big deal about being too tough to turn over documents. Hmmmmmm

The part about the papers is simply the grounds for a graceful withdrawal. It allows the President to appear as if standing on principle rather than the incompetent fool that the nation is now discovering that he has been all along.

There are two things that are REALLY starting to make me furious.

And I mean FURIOUS. Fuming Screaming Clawing Mad.

One is the words 'Iraq the mistake' Iraq was NO mistake. Not for a moment did they misunderstand it. The people who wanted blood by the gallon calculated, distracted, manuvered EVERY STEP OF THE WAY to get EXACTLY what they wanted. War Profits.

Iraq was no mistake. It was BLOODY TREASON.

And 2

I feel better because everyone now is starting to get it, you know bush is EVIL in his heart. We all sit in mortified awe of his... filthy presence in our midst. It has become obvious every time he got what he wanted he left a broken, battered, violated system behind him.

Steal as much as you can and blow up the evidence on the way out. Here, Iraq...to him its the same thing.

Yet even those who understand and even accept this, they still speak of the future being just a tommorrow away. I know WHY you do it..its hope. Hope literally springing eternal from within.

But tommorrow does not matter if our nation is smothered to death in her bed tonight.

Bush is about to be cornered, when he is, he will hurt every single one of us just to prove he is a king.

Screw waiting around to fix it, the foundation itself is shattering. Many of our people will be frozen and starved to death long before 2008 can get here.

In other words, the ol' same ol' same ol'. That has been the methodus operandi.

Yes, but, I provide the explanation to the wingnuts explaining that I know they don't want to make it very clear to those waiting to be spoon fed that the ubercapitalists don't want Miers in there. They want someone who will insure their interests are taken care of. They could care less about Roe vs. Wade. They would eat Miers and a baby for breakfast if they stood in the way of capitalism, err, imperialism.

Dumb and Dumber. If you can sit through this version YOU get the academy award.

Grand Jury Hears Summary of Case On CIA Leak Probe
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/26/AR2005102600532_pf.html

The prosecutor in the CIA leak investigation presented a summary of his case to a federal grand jury yesterday and is expected to announce a final decision on charges in the two-year-long probe tomorrow, according to people familiar with the case.

Even as Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald wrapped up his case, the legal team of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove has been engaged in a furious effort to convince the prosecutor that Rove did not commit perjury during the course of the investigation, according to people close to the aide. The sources, who indicated that the effort intensified in recent weeks, said Rove still did not know last night whether he would be indicted...
