State of The Union is a State of Emergency

The Democracy Cell Project is reporting live from the Capitol, and will be doing so all evening.

WASHINGTON D.C.-Live Blogging the SOTU, and the Alternative SOTU happenings around Washington DC from today's activities and the plans for the evening events.

Karen is reporting in to us right now.

She is standing directly front of the Capitol. A cold wind is blowing in Washington tonight. Interestingly enough, there are about 14 FEMA trucks between the protesters and the Capitol itself. It's possible, though hard to believe, that these trucks somehow got lost on their way to provide relief in Louisiana, for what other purpose could they be here, when help is still so desperately needed there?

It's sadly heartwarming to see that flags are flying at half-mast in observance of the death of civil rights icon Coretta Scott King. To the program tonight for the Alternative SOTU, we have added a bagpiper who will be playing Amazing Grace at the beginning of the event, to honor Mrs. King's memory.

Right now nationally known performers Chris Chandler and David Roe are setting up the and sound checking their instruments. They will be contributing spoken word and musical performances this evening, along with geurilla poets, jazz musicians, folk musicians, a few tap dancers (and you thought they were all tap dancers in Washington were members of Congress, busily answering corruption charges), along with The Rhythm Workers Union, who will be bringing in the "mother drum ship". We're not quite sure what a "mother drum ship is", but it is certain to be more interesting than watching Mrs.Sob Sister Alito in the gallery sitting with the self-styled Laura "I AM a Desperate Housewife" Bush.

Earlier today, Karen wandered through many alternatives to the State of the Union. One highlight of the afternoon was the large "Impeach Bush" sign being driven around the neighborhood, courtesy of The Velvet Revolution.

Gold Star Mother Cindy Sheehan is doing many events today and Karen has run into her several times, and can report that it's much warmer in Venezuela than Washington, in more ways than one.

As the day wore on, it became clear that more people than ever before, are coming out of their homes and into the street to protest this president's policies and the lies and deceptions he and his administration have used to sell them to an unwitting, and sadly, and unquestioning public. But the public of years before, is not the public this administration will be facing this evening. The public is sending this President a message-his popularity is at 39% for a reason. People are angry, dissatisfied, and remember the sixteen words from the State of the Union of two years ago. And they remember that they were lied to. And the anger and the questions have just begun.

The limosines are beginning to arrive, carrying the scions of political power once more behind the gates, and away from We the People. But not for long.

Evening has fallen in Washington, and the perfume of dissent is sweeping briskly through the air.

Written and reported by Karen B. and Casey Morris, The Democracy Cell Project

[Editors Note: Cross-posted at The Daily Kos. There will be live blogging of the SOTU this evening beginning at 8:45 here on The Democracy Cell Project Blog, and in the IRC Chat Room. Please come join us.]

Karen says it's true Cindy was arrested! Deedee saw it happen. They don't know where she was taken or why.

I drove home in the rain & tuned into R&B, then Spanish-language radio, then world music. I came in the house & my husband had the cretin on the radio but decided to turn it off, so I only heard a couple of seconds.

People are drowning him out here but by the time I got there, it would be over. The traffic was especially snarly so I imagined that quite a few were listening to "him" and finding it revoluting.

I do not acknowledge him as legitimite.

CNN reported that Cindy was in the building, and unwrapped a banner, and that that was against the hall rules, so they arrested her, and took her somewhere to question her for an hour, and she won't be let back in.

Cindy stole some of his thunder tonight. While he's telling everybody how great they've got it, she's being taken away by police.

Frontline (off-air HD PBS) just had an informative program on about how the Bush Invasion of Iraq has inflamed Muslims across Europe and is directly to blame for terrorist attacks there. The focus of the program was Spain, which was considered by the jihadists to be the weakest link in the coalition of the willing-to-kill. Terrorist experts, lawyers, law enforcement personnel were interviewed from various countries; their anger at the US came through loud and clear, though they chose their words carefully. The US is holding suspects in Guantanamo and won't give the Europeans access to them; as a result, jihadists are going free in Europe because of a lack of testimony. Very enlightening program, and distressing.

I guess it aired at the same time as some speech was going on? Yawn. Sorry I missed that.

he needs to be impeached by then

& I'll make a habit of not watching

Travis is leading the march. Karen is going home now. It was AMAZING. They are breathless with excitement.

At the end of Bush's speech, there was rousing noice and Bush stepped down. Then Bill Mitchell announced that Cindy was being held in a nearby police station. So the crowd has marched over to the station to free her!

Ken Mackie played another round of Amazing Grace in honor of Mike Mitchell's son and Casey Sheehan (Cindy's son.).

It was a POWERFUL moment of honoring these families. The silence was very powerful!

And then the crowd began to march toward the police station led by Ken Mckie and the Rhythm Worker's Union on the drums.

Karen will post more when she arrives home. But for now, the protest was a success.

There are tons of media who were there tonight.

Amy said:

DiAnne, all the European countries are having huge problems with their Muslim populations now. The ease of travelling to Iraq from there, as opposed to from here, was explained. Muslims are driving to Turkey from France, Italy, Germany.... then from Turkey, they cross the border and into Iraq. In many cases, these people are known to be weapons experts of various kinds. They are getting involved in the insurgency, even doing some of the training. They had footage....
An American official said it best - "We've set up the perfect terrorist training center - Iraq."

The White House refused to allow anyone from the Bush administration to be interviewed.

sparrow said:

According to Karen, the truth about Cindy's arrest was that she wore a t'shirt that had the number of dead soldier's listed on it. She did not unfurl a banner as reported.

We were in France and got a bargain package trip to Turkey from lastminute.com - it didn't escape my notice that the Asian half of Turkey borders on Iraq. It looks pretty rural so I'll bet people can just "blend in" and head right in. There could be alot of traffic back & forth.

A year later we took the train from UK to France. The train stopped midway and we had to wait 40 minutes. They said there were "people on the tracks" - those are usually people sneaking from one country into another.

They are in a world of trouble. & Iran has some long-range missiles. & now Putin claims to have a weapon no one has that can change course in mid-air & claims he detailed it to Chirac. That may be part of why Chirac did not rule out use of nukes were France to be attacked.

None of this was discussed tonight at the SOTU, I'm sure.

Cindy takes a stand. I missed seeing my son tonight - I know I was thinking of her. The last fun time she had with her son was at our Seattle Pike Market & he would have been my son's age. He was stationed at Ft. Lewis, our nearest Army post. I often think about that.

I'm home and feeling better--it was a long cold afternoon/evening. They took Cindy downtown--pretty stupid. They said they would release her and then they moved her instead.

Rev. Deborah Lake is staying here, so we have a full house tonight.

We are completely exhausted, appalled at the SOTU (which we have now actually seen), and shocked at the stupidity of the Capitol Police.

For those of you in the IRC tonight what a grand time, listening to that speech wasn't easy, and I thank those who took the time to listen and participate. In the end that really is democracy, the willingness to listen and debate.

I do hope that there aren't any virtual hangovers in the morning.

karen said:

I would like to ask anyone still up to help get the word out that Cindy was taken downtown rather than being released, as we were told she would be.

And for anyone who thinks Cindy did ANYTHING to provoke this ridiculous act, I can assure you that she wore the same shirt she had been wearing all day--for her prebuttal--and that it was a last minute opportunity to go inside the chambers; she did not particularly want to do it, and did not decide until about 7:45 to do so.

She did not even think about what she was wearing, since she'd been in it all day long.

She was moved from the Capitol Police Station to the Downtown station. As of this time, there has been no word of her release.

Karen will update this as soon as she hears.

Indy said:

Will you...yes YOU Karen, stop deifying people who get arrested at stupid moments?

Cindy Sheehan did her thing...and did it well with heart and soul...I know I was THERE...in Crawford, though I might as well have been a million miles away.

You see...Cindy has chosen her path because of her profound loss and her free will. She chose to come to Covington. Louisiana for a press junket...but found the reality and loss far to great to bear for her to remain and "make a statement".

What I find most appalling is those who have never stuck their own necks out for something important and yet encourage others to do just that...that which they themselves will not ever do...NOT EVER have the courage to do.

You can try to dismantle me or my "motives" but I am here on one of the battle grounds of America making a positive difference without getting arrested or being shown on Fox News every night.

Unless we are ALL willing to stand up and fight for that which we profess and believe to be true and just and worthwhile, than we are nothing more than back-seat drivers of democracy...Sunday morning quarterbacks...or worse...

Stop being sideline cheer-leaders of others who have sacrificed their dignity and freedom in your name and get out there and DO SOMETHING!!!

If any of you believe in doing in the name of freedom than do you not think it is about time you actually DID SOMETHING?!?!?!

I want to read about Madame Defarge getting arrested streaking down a Chicago street with a freedom or freeze my ass off sign on her bare bottom!

I want to hear stories for weeks about a peculiar mammalian man who snubbed the secret service at the Lincoln Memorial without brushing his big pointy teeth in the name of freedom for all living things!

I want to see with my own eyes Dick and Karen's pictures on the cover of the Washington post as "Rabble rousers"..."Rebels"..."Patriots"...

Until then...

Until then there is nothing that any of you can say to cause me to riot, react, write or want to prostrate myself about that I have not already experienced...including Cindy Sheehan's antics.

She lost her son...and because of that I was deeply moved and spent many days and nights with her and many others in Crawford, Texas...

The city of myth and legend and the culture of life that is New Orleans has been the subject of much uneducated debate and debacle...and yet...

I am here every day making a difference because I will personally stand up to the mayor...the city counsel or anyone who tries to defile this great culture of life with transient or partisan causes.

Unless each and everyone is willing to stand up and stand out within your own communities...

How dare you sit comfortably behind your keyboards and criticize or censor anyone!!!

As you are all so fond of saying...

"Democracy is not a spectator sport!"

Well...just what is it you all have been doing all of this time in your air-conditioned homes and typing on your keyboards?

DO SOMETHING FOR ONCE!!!

The Real State Of The Union
How to address a bitter, war-torn but still somehow giddy and deeply horny nation
By Mark Morford

My fellow Americans, we're not as royally screwed as everything Bush has done during his miserable term in office would have you believe.

Yes, we are on the brink of epic destruction involving war and sweaty religious nutballs and a mad grab for the planet's few remaining gurgles of oil and the general appalling lousiness of the new TV season. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Destruction can be healthy. A positive force. Destruction sweeps the place bare, scrubs out the spiritual colon, cleanses the palate for what's next. And besides, have you seen "Grey's Anatomy"? Totally cute.

But here's the best part: No one really knows what's next. Oh sure, we have prognosticators and pundits and professional fearmongers from the GOP and the religious right who want to tell you that the apocalypse is nigh and God hates everything you do and if the terrorists don't get your fresh innocent white babies, the gays or the pot smokers or the rappers will.

But the truth is, we really haven't the slightest clue what's going on. Hell, 20 years ago, who could have predicted the insane rise of the Internet? The success of the Toyota Prius? Five-hundred-dollar Gucci iPod cases? Polyphonic ring tones? Dark matter? The baffling success of Ashlee Simpson? Puggles? This much we know: We don't know squat. Except, of course, that there is one hell of a lot more to know. ...

Rudy Heads South
"America's Mayor" tests the national political waters very far from the Big Apple

By HILARY HYLTON/AUSTIN
Posted Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006

Political pundits have long discounted former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential prospects, claiming that his particular brand of tough-talking, socially moderate conservatism would never play south of the Mason-Dixon Line. But Rudy has never been one to listen to conventional wisdom, and lately at least, he has been turning up the heat in southern conservative political circles.

In just the last week, he endorsed Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry for re-election and met with Evangelicals in Florida. Most impressively, he actually outpaced U.S. Senator John McCain in a just-released Georgia poll, garnering the support of 28 percent of Georgia Republicans to McCain's 22 percent, echoing numbers in December's CNN/USA Today/Gallup nationwide poll. The conservative blog, RightWingNews reported last week that while Condoleezza Rice was the top choice of 230 conservative bloggers for the Republican nomination, Giuliani came in second, beating out U.S. Senator George Allen and Newt Gingrich. Nationwide, Rudy earned a 63 percent favorable rating in a Pew Research Center poll in October.

In addition to supporting Perry, Giuliani has planted a Texas-sized footstep in the Lone Star State—now with three more Electoral College votes than New York. Last spring, he became a name partner in a Houston law firm, Bracewell and Giuliani, noted for its Bush connections and roster of major energy clients.

The Catholic mayor is also busy burnishing his ties to Christian conservatives. Pat Robertson has said Rudy would make "a good president" and the mayor was a headliner for a fundraising committee supporting former Christian Coalition executive Ralph Reed in his bid to be Georgia's lieutenant governor. Last week, Giuliani dropped by an Orlando meeting of the Global Pastors Network and told the Evangelical leaders that "only God knows" if he will run for president. The group offered their prayers for him and he responded in kind, showing an openly devout side not many people had seen before: "I can't tell you from my heart how much I appreciate what you are doing—saving people, telling them about Jesus Christ and bringing them to God."

(from Joe Scarborough, play-by-play SOTU blogging on MSNBC's website last night)

Were you one of the fourteen Americans who watched the Democrats' response to Bush’s State of the Union address tonight?

What the hell did he say? Fell asleep two minutes into it.

If you’re a Democrat and you have a shot at talking to the American people, you should talk about the culture of corruption in Washington. You should hammer home the fact that our federal debt is higher than ever. And you should talk about how young Americans are dying overseas in wars without apparent end.

Instead, we heard another bland Democratic response. Maybe not making news is the best way to win elections. But it is no way to inspire Americans.

------

Listening to the chatter from my perch on Capitol Hill makes it clear that the Democratic Party is in dire need of guidance. So here is a Republican’s humble suggestion on how to gain traction with the majority of American voters.

Hammer home these three themes over the next ten months:

1. There is a culture of corruption in Republican-run washington.

2. There are record deficits, record debts and record government waste in Republican-run Washington.

3. Soldiers are dying across the world for reasons that are still not clear three years later.

Keep it simple, stupid. And tell Ted Kennedy to keep his head down in 2006.

So tell me this:

Since when does wearing a t-shirt that has truth on it of how many men have been killed in this war a crime? A reason to be asked to leave a conference as an invited guest and escorted out by police?

Thanks, Indy, for the suggestion on how to get arrested. I prefer to help save our democracy in more positive ways. Although I don't need to explain to you or to anyone else what I'm doing to make a difference, suffice it to say that I'm following the wise words of Tip O'Neill.

Posted by: karen at February 1, 2006 07:19 AM

Karen, we all know better, and are profoundly grateful and proud of you and Dick and everything you do on behalf of Democracy.

Of course, we are all entitled to our opinion, and in the interest of not being interested in another altercation, because I have already said this once before when we were all accused of being couch potatoes and ne'r do wells, it is worth repeating, so I will say it.

We each are unique individuals, with very distinct and different abilities, personalities, strength and talents. We are not all the same physically, emotionally, or financially. Some here may have a health problem, or a loved one they care for that has a health problem. Our resources individually vary for each and every one of us for we have differing life styles.

To my way of thinking, it is not constructive, nor edifying to take a group of people and judge them without knowing each circumstance and attitude and motive of every person involved. I know that by reading here, and learning here, that I feel I know people's attitudes and motives for the most part, and I haven't even met most of you in person. But we agree on one thing: We each want to do what we can to help make our country better, and to nourish our own souls, our friends and families, our neighborhoods. We do this because this is the kind of people we are. We want to contribute something, to make the world better.

But, we can't all do it the same way. While some of us have more finances, we contribute that resource....we don't look around and look at the rest in our group who don't have extra to spare this month and judge them. We believe in each other around here. If someone else is laid up with a physical problem, it is just as vital to their sense of wanting to be part of a constructive effort on behalf of this community, nation, and world to do what they can, and contribute what they contribute. From these people we can glean alot from what they do contribute. They may have more opportunity to read, research, and help keep us informed with the best news sources available. Someone else may not have extra resources to contribute financially, but they are in a vicinity where they are allowed to hold a job and attend ralleys and be very active in participating in many physical ways that Karen and Dick can that we out here in the sticks can't always do.

Please, please stop judging. Think the best. Believe in your fellow patriots. We are all in this together, and nobody needs or wants praise or recognition for all they do. Truth be known, Karen and Dick don't even have time to TELL us all they do for democracy. They are busy doing it.

When we sit behind our keyboards we are doing what our circumstances will allow. And people's circumstances change all the time. I for one will be very glad I have the knowledge I do when circumstances get different.

I so hope this message is understood this time.

May I suggest that none of us blow our own horn, unless we are blowing it in support of another.

Amy said:

I feel like I do as much as I can where I am, have had my picture in the paper - with my name! - twice, for protests against the war, have attended every possible assembly that aimed to thwart this administration on every one of their elitist initiatives, and do a ton of precinct work in several precincts.

Yet I am humbled by Dick and Karen and all they are doing.

I think Indy's point is this: When are we all going to be so sick of this mess that we take a huge risk in order to make our point? I think his challenge was meant collectively -

For example, the bill passed today in the house gutted Education funding. Teachers in the staff room after school were appalled - it was like they'd all been kicked in the stomach. So I said "Every teacher in America needs to walk out, now."

Well, they looked at me like I was crazy. America is still too comfortable to give up anything. The middle class is headed for anhilation, but until we're almost there, we'll just "protest." I think that was Indy's point.

Cindy Sheehan has nothing left to lose. How long will it take for the rest of us to get there?

its half freedom of speech, half disorderly conduct. and i mean, its the state of the union, theres no way anything even slightly provocative could get into the capitol building....pick ur battles a little more wisely mrs. sheehan.

but jeez, we dont even know what het shirt exactly said. ABCnews was saying it was a banner.
