You're Gonna Need a Notion...or an Ocean

The world's oceans aren't the only thing that global warming is sending creeping up the shores of our lives. Scientists are reporting that as we pour more and more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, we're going to be making the country's poison ivy plants very, very happy.

Not only will the carbon dioxide-drunk poison ivy plants grow faster and larger, they'll be pumping out a more poisonous form of that excellent chemical (urushiol--whoever named this stuff picked a suitably creepy name)that causes misery for 80% of human beings who get it on their skin.

Having spent a while in a hospital as a child after wandering through smoke coming from a field containing poison ivy (thank god I had my shorts on; the entire rest of my body broke out--and I was scarfing steroids faster than Barry Bonds), I'm not looking forward to this super-poison ivy.

The researchers used a Duke research forest dotted with pipes that allows them to pump out extra CO2. In the poison ivy experiment, they raised the level of CO2 to what it's expected to be in 2050 (about 200 million parts per million higher, for you wonks out there). And lo, and behold, super ivy!

So another part of the wonderful world of global warming snaps into place. Unintended consequence? I don't think so. Plants are our friends? Not in this case. No more walks in the woods for me--see you at the beach (as long as the damn jellyfish don't start getting off on more CO2 too!).

Rock the Boat
by The Hues Corportion

So I'd like to know where, you got the notion
said I'd like to know where, you got the notion

to rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby
rock the boat, don't tip the boat over
rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby
rock the boat-t-t-t-t

Ever since our voyage of love began
your touch has thrilled me like the rush of the wind
and your arms have held me safe from a rolling sea
there's always been a quiet place to harbor you and me

Our love is like a ship on the ocean
we've been sailing with a cargo full of, love and devotion

So I'd like to know where, you got the notion
said I'd like to know where, you got the notion

To rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby
rock the boat, don't tip the boat over
rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby
rock the boat-t-t-t-t

Up to now we sailed through every storm
and I've always had your tender lips to keep me warm
oh I need to have the strength that flows from you
don't let me drift away my dear, when love can see me through

Our love is like a ship ...

And the automotive enthusiast community is starting to look a LOT like the gun community, turning ever more to the right in defense of their cars, as it becomes more clear that their enthusiasm are *the* reason for global warming.

This is pathetic, because in order to get useful advice for my own cars, I have to dig through anti-union drivel (i.e. praise for the management of Toyota and BMW's Southern sweatshops, and ripping of GM and Ford's "rampant unionism"), criticism of "environmental wackos," and else (including Ford's pandering to special interests, AKA gays). I once thought this problem was just specific to my Ford Contour, but now I see the same problem with BMWs and other cars too (even Volvos). We lost sportsmen by losing gun owners, now do we have to lose car enthusiasts too?

I may have been too cryptic in the title of this item, although it's interesting to see the other "notion" songs out there.

In checking lyrics sites, I find that I may have gotten the lyrics wrong too: instead of a "notion of calamine lotion," most of the sites have, "You're gonna need an ocean of calamine lotion."

I've been singing the "notion" version to myself for lo these 4 and plenty decades, but if it's "oceans," do be it. There were times when I had PI that I wanted to jump into a bathtub full of calamine lotion. And for those of you who've suffered with PI, you may have had the pleasure of taking a cool oatmeal path. I'll have to try working "oatmeal bath" into the lyrics sometime.

Poison Ivy

Artist: The Coasters (peak Billboard position # 7 in 1959)
Words and Music by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller

(Thought by some to not be about a plant at all, but rather a young lady with a social disease)

She comes on like a rose but everybody knows
She'll get you in Dutch
You can look but you better not touch

Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y
Late at night while you're sleepin' poison ivy comes a'creepin'
Arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound

She's pretty as a daisy but look out man she's crazy
She'll really do you in
If you let her under your skin

Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y
Late at night while you're sleepin' poison ivy comes a'creepin'
Arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound

Measles make you bumpy
And mumps'll make you lumpy
And chicken pox'll make you jump and twitch
A common cold'll fool ya
And whooping cough can cool ya
But poison ivy, Lord'll make you itch!!

You're gonna need an ocean of calamine lotion
You'll be scratchin' like a hound
The minute you start to mess around

Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y
Late at night while you're sleepin' poison ivy comes a'creepin'
Arou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound

Measles make you bumpy
And mumps'll make you lumpy
And chicken pox'll make you jump and twitch
A common cold'll fool ya
And whooping cough can cool ya
But poison ivy, Lord'll make you itch!!

You're gonna need an ocean of calamine lotion
You'll be scratchin' like a hound
The minute you start to mess around

Poison iv-y-y-y-y, poison iv-y-y-y-y

Super Poison Ivy & Other Freaks of Nature

My aunt is thought to have Margollan's disease, where parasitic fibers creep under the skin & drive one mad and small red, brown or white fibers can be seen creeping from wound sites. Sufferers complain of memory loss and problems with mental function after awhile. They are often accused of being hypochondriacs because so little is known, but there is an active internet community of sufferers.

She lives in Wyoming & speculation is that she somehow contracted it from a carrier from Southern Texas because her immune system is so low. The Austin area is where the most cases areOne doctor has seen over a hundred cases in his area. Even parasitologists don't know much about the disease but about half who have it seem to also get Lyme's disease.

It really seems that changes in the environment could precipitate a whole host of new diseases.

Add to destruction of ecological niches for certain species - it's not as if they can adapt. Most exist within a small margin. Or if they adapt, it may be an adaptation favorable to their species (like with the poison ivy), not favorable to humans.

Then there is the whole issue of deforestation and destruction, especially in rainforests, so that we not only lose species but lose potential cures for cancer & other diseases.

Therapists such as myself have seen a huge increase in autism, Aspergers, asthma in children and new allergies such as with peanuts. When I was a kid, Santa Claus handed out peanuts. Now my healthcare daycare has a "peanut free zone" and many elementary schools prohibit any home-baked treats.

This Friday night Al Gore's documentary is opening at two theaters here. It has been getting a great reception, but there is already a media campaign backed by oil companies - to discredit it & him. There was even an article called "The Swift Boating of Al Gore" that someone sent me. & of course, that was tried when he ran for President. I have a Gore backer friend who is a long-distance sailor. He once voted for Bush because he thought Gore was an "environmental wacko." That's before he started researching mercury & how it's forever. & he just became a Canadian landed immigrant & is relocating from Florida to British Columbia.

The following is a message from Mark Crispin Miller about a forthcoming article by Robert Kennedy Jr claiming that Republicans stole the 2004 Ohio Presidential election.

Here, finally, is that mainstream piece that I've been publicly referring to for months. As I had promised Rolling Stone and Kennedy that I would keep it confidential, I could not mention the specifics, but here they are at last.

This piece should finally snap the Dems out of their trance, and push the media-both mainstream and progressive--to pay due attention to this all-important issue.

EXCLUSIVE: BOBBY KENNEDY JR. TO QUESTION 2004 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN MAJOR ROLLING STONE FEATURE ARTICLE!

Says 'Evidence Shows High-Level Republicans Suceeded in Scheme to Steal Election in Ohio'!

Mag to Hit Stands Friday, Internet on Thursday, Publicity Push to Accompany

A damning and detailed feature article, written by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., for Rolling Stone, documenting evidence of the theft of the 2004 Presidential Election is set to hit newstands this Friday, The BRAD BLOG can now confirm. The online version of the article will be posted tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

The article, which has been several months in development, will contend that a concerted effort was undertaken by high-level Republican officials to steal the Election in Ohio -- and thus the country -- in 2004!

Kennedy told The BRAD BLOG this morning that "the best evidence says the Republicans succeeded" in their plan.

He writes in the article, and confirmed to us today, that evidence shows Ohio Sec. of State J. Kenneth Blackwell was "certainly in on" the scheme, and "there are indications that the effort went all the way up to the White House." ...

...DEVELOPING VERY HARD...MORE DETAILS BELOW...AND MORE SHORTLY...

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - U.S. forces killed two Iraqi women - one of them about to give birth - when the troops shot at a car that failed to stop at an observation post in a city north of Baghdad, Iraqi officials and relatives said Wednesday. Nabiha Nisaif Jassim, 35, was being raced to the maternity hospital in Samarra by her brother when the shooting occurred Tuesday.

Feds to city: drop dead
BY MICHAEL SAUL in New York and MICHAEL McAULIFF in Washington
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS
Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

The city was stunned yesterday to find that its share of federal anti-terror funds was slashed nearly in half by bureaucrats who said it has no national icons to protect and lousy defense plans.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff determined, however, that cities that have never been targeted by Al Qaeda — like Louisville, Atlanta and Omaha — deserve whopping increases.

"This is a knife in the back," fumed a furious Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. "As far as I'm concerned, the Department of Homeland Security has declared war on New York."

Mayor Bloomberg ridiculed Homeland Security's reasoning.

"When you stop a terrorist, they have a map of New York City in their pocket. They don't have a map of any of the other 46 places or 45 places [that get funding]," he fumed.

The city will get $125 million from the feds' high-threat bank account, a 40% cut from the $207 million it received last year. The Homeland money pot was smaller overall this year, but the rest of the country is being trimmed just 14%.

They're Making a Monumental Error
by Michael Daley

The federal Homeland Security Department has this to say about the home of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, the New York Stock Exchange, the Brooklyn Bridge, the United Nations, Yankee Stadium, the country's biggest subway system, Grant's Tomb, Grand Central Terminal, the Federal Reserve Bank and Federal Hall.

"NATIONAL MONUMENTS AND ICONS - 0"

Meaning the New York area has nada, zilch, zippo, not a one, a zero that dismisses even Ground Zero. The assertion is made on page 4 of an eight-page Homeland Security Department document that seeks to justify a 40% cut in our federal anti-terrorism funding.

"This is a very sophisticated formula for developing a risk-based approach," a Homeland Security spokesman said yesterday.

He was asked why this same formula set the number of major financial institutions in New York at four when there are, at a minimum, 20, including the federal depository in downtown Manhattan that has more gold than Fort Knox has. He seemed manifestly untroubled by the error and declined to comment any further.

"We're simply not going to provide the specifics to the bad guys," he said.

Security Cuts for New York and Washington
By ERIC LIPTON

WASHINGTON, May 31 — After vowing to steer a greater share of antiterrorism money to the highest-risk communities, Department of Homeland Security officials on Wednesday announced 2006 grants that slashed money for New York and Washington 40 percent, while other cities including Omaha and Louisville, Ky., got a surge of new dollars.

The release of the 2006 urban area grants, which total $711 million, was immediately condemned by leaders in Washington and New York.

"When you stop a terrorist, they have a map of New York City in their pocket," Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York said. "They don't have a map of any of the other 46 or 45 places."

In Washington, Mayor Anthony Williams said: "It was very shortsighted for the federal government to gut our homeland security funding program, even more so because so many dollars continue to be spent in rural areas that are far less likely to emerge as targets."
