Where Do They Teach This Stuff?
Lying is an effective way of governing, if no one calls your bluff. For months, David A. Prentice, a scientist with the right-wing Family Research Council and Senator Sam Brownback (both strong opponents of loosening restrictions) have claimed that adult stem cells were just as useful as embyronic stem cells, and that adult stem cells were already treating more than 65 diseases. Prentice cited scientific studies, which he said demonstrated the use of adult stem cells against these 65 diseases.
Only one problem. Prentice was lying. According to a letter from three scientists in the latest issue of Science, Prentice's footnotes do refer to scientific studies: it's just that most of these studies have nothing to do with the treatment of any disease with adult stem cells.
To take one example: Prentice cites a study he claims shows the use of adult stem cells in treating testicular cancer. Nope. The study is about isolating adult stems cells.
Another "study" turned out to be "a layperson's statement in a newspaper article."
At best, the studies Prentice cites refer to adult stem cells being used to treat 9 diseases, not 65.
This story was in yesterday's papers. But this morning, in a Boston Globe story on the Senate showdown, we find the head of the Family Research Council, Tony Perkins, telling the Globe:
Embryonic stem-cell research has produced no successful tretment for human beings, whereas adult stem cell research has produced results for over 70 different medical conditions.
Notice that Perkins, after his organization has been exposed as lying about the effectiveness of adult stem cells, has expanded the lie by raising the total to 70.
And note that the Boston Globe's reporter and editors are asleep at the switch. The Globe should be ashamed of itself for printing such trash without any acknowledgement that this Perkins' number is based on a "study" that has been completely discredited.

See end of last thread for kudos! DCPers ROCK! (Suz LITERALLY rocks!)
Fasting here is easy... the excessive heat makes you lose you appetite, so you end up fasting even if you didn't intend to. Just have to remember to drink lots and lots of water. I switch off between water, orange juice, a combo tea I like with some sugar in it (mint & Red Rose - and that's real sugar, not artificial sweeteners which I can't have) and I can drink that cold - or warm in the winter. I got up when it was cool yesterday and felt a teeny bit hungry, so made some oatmeal flavored with a sprinkle of cinnamon and had that with cream, milk, and a bit of sugar.
I understand why people in hotter climates take siestas. The heat just drains one of energy!
The heat has also kept me offline because my PC starts to overheat when my AC isn't running as cold as it does when temps are down to normal.
MN (and eleven other states) have had the hottest average temps on record in the last twelve months than in all the time since records began being kept. We're running 4.5 degrees above average for the last twelve months, there's a little forest fire in the Boundary Waters area which could spread if not stopped and the MN guard has been sent to the area, and the upper two thirds of the state is in danger of a full-fledged drought if we don't get some rain soon (and none in the forecast except for a few fleeting showers occasionally). So, global warming is a "theory" eh? Harrumph...!
For those who are into political art: Last night I saw the third installment (rerun of the show from earlier this week) of "How Art Made The World" on PBS... and the narrator went back to the earliest political art (Darius), the earliest form of mass portraiture that connected to leaders (coinage), the earliest political propaganda art that was technically a lie (Octavian/Augustus), and connected it to modern times. Fascinating! (Besides other world leaders in full regalia and costumes, it had a pix of he-who-shall-not-be-named in the flight suit with the codpiece on the ship with the 'Mission Accomplished' nonsense.) In any case, I don't know what PBS is showing in your local markets, but if you see the series advertised, the narrator connects very ancient art with what's going on in modern times. I've found it quite interesting so far. I don't know how many installments the series has, but so far three have been shown. PBS (in the local market) has some 'uneven' scheduling of shows recently, and the local market has had some pretty right-wing and military history stuff, so I don't catch more than Mystery and this new How Art Made The World series. (I know the military history stuff is valid and "patriotic" - but I've officially OD'd on war and militarism and can't bear to watch it, 'cuz it seems to promote the idea that war is a glorious occupation which indirectly supports Bu$hCo's wars....) Last night's show was brought to mind by Dick's thread header; political lying and political propaganda has been around for centuries. Unfortunately.
To everyone fasting: lots and lots of water, and follow ladietechie's excellent advice from the previous thread. If your health could be compromised, see a doctor first. Every third take in some kind of bland food. I'd add that if your health can't deal with a full fast, just do a partial fast and take in some kind of food even daily; given the heat, no one will fault you for partial fasting. And water, water, water, vitamin drinks, protein drinks, etc., that will keep your energy up. You do want to remain healthy throughout the fasting process, or else the whole point is lost - no need to end up in the hospital and spending money to feed the corporate medicos, so be very common-sensical about fasting and if your health forbids fasting, just give empathetic support to those healthy enough to fast (and if it's as hot where you are as it is here, you need to drink extra water, anyway, and stay indoors where you have an AC and/or fans).
Be well, everyone, and stay as cool as possible.
DNC's Voting Rights Institute Calls for "Manual Count" of all Ballots in Busby/Bilbray Election
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/071506Y.shtml
In a harshly worded statement, the DNC's Voting Rights Institute has issued a statement condemning the administration of the recent US House race between Democrat Francine Busby and Republican Brian Bilbray, joining a growing national outcry in calling for "a swift and verifiable 'manual count' of all 150,000 ballots cast in California's 50th District's 'bellwether' June 6th special election."
This is the part that bothers me:
"Bilbray declared himself the winner on election night, and was sworn into office several days later, before all votes had been counted, and nearly three weeks prior to the election being certified by either state or county officials."
"Bilbray declared himself the winner" ... Why the bum's rush to have a declared winner before polls even close or a final count of votes? That's part and parcel of the "problem" on national and state elections, too, when Lamestream Media "predicts" winners based on exit polling (which was accurate, until 2000 and '04...). All of that, of course, on top of the fact that the voting machines can be hacked into, and in the case of the Busby-Bilbray election, the voting machines were stored in unsecure locations prior to the election. Who knows what kind of 'pre-programming' might have occurred?

Megachurches build a Republican base
{{{Okay. Now tell us something we don't know. I've seen articles like this before, some worded almost exactly the same, and to me it "seems" like the articles are "planted" for the sheeple/lemming mentality types who just need that extra push to join the cult of those who think our fearless "leader" is doing just great because of his faith.... IMHO, this is most definitely religious AND political propaganda. I don't know why Lamestream Media even publishes this still, since so many articles like it have already been published. Neffer mind. Repetition is the cornerstone of good brainwashing tactics, and to someone like me, repetion is only boring - and besides which, I'm Jeffersonian in my belief that religion and politics need to be kept totally separate.}}}

Megachurches build a Republican base By Andrea Hopkins
2 hours, 59 minutes ago
(excerpts)
It's not Sunday but Fairfield Christian Church is packed. "There are people here from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day -- sometimes later," senior pastor Russell Johnson says as he surveys the activity.
The 4,000 members of Fairfield Christian are part of the growing evangelical Christian movement in middle America.
The fastest-growing faith group in America, evangelical Christians have had a growing impact on the nation's political landscape, in part because adherents believe conservative Christian values should have a place in politics -- and they support politicians who agree with them.
In that March survey, more than 82 percent of the Ohio evangelicals who attend church at least once a week said they approve of bringing more religion into politics.
"I prayed in school but my kids can't pray in school," said volunteer Lisa Sexton, 42, a Bible school volunteer.
Political analyst John Green said evangelical growth has had a major political impact in Ohio, a key swing state that narrowly decided President George W. Bush's election victory in 2004.
"There was a particular intensification of evangelical links to the Republican Party during the Bush administration in 2000 and 2004."
GOD AND POLITICS
Sexton believes every word in the Bible, rejects evolution theory, and supports the Iraq war, the Republican Party and Bush -- in part because he is a born-again Christian.
Signs of growth are everywhere at Fairfield Christian. The facilities will soon encompass 325,000 square feet -- about twice the size of an average Wal-Mart superstore.
Johnson is being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service for possible violations of a law that prohibits churches and charities from participating in political campaigns. He denies breaking any law.
Church members are supportive.
"I appreciate the fact that the church is politically involved," said Kyle Hatfield, a 30-year-old father of two who believes the separation of church and state has gone too far.
What's Wrong w/Ann Coulter: another bitchy, sour negative Book
Guess what?? Annie Coulter has another extended criticism/rant against "liberals" which takes the form of a "book". I saw her book prominently displayed at my local Barnes and Noble bookstore.
The cover was a typical Coulter bookcover - a glossy, narricist and attempted glamorous photo of Coulter (ME, ME, ME, LOOK AT ME!!!), with her trademark too long hair and too short skirt. But there was something new in the photo that Annie was wearing for this book cover (called "GODLESS"): a crucifix, presumbably to prove she is religious (or has found religion at least). I must confess that I don't recall Coulter wearing a crucifix in any other of her glam book covers, but maybe I am too cynical and just not observant. (I would be very curious to know what church Coulter attends and is a member of, whether she is a Catholic, how much money does she donates to her church etc....)
I skimmed through the hatefilled text of Coulter's rant. I was interested in the last part of the book which was basically an attack on "science"; The same Western science which has made our nation one the richest and most technologically advanced in the world. Poor Darwin gets bashed as a godless liberal who came up with the crazy, idiotic theory called "evolution"; a theory which Darwin hastily and sloppily threw together and 19th century liberals mindlessly took to heart immediately.
Now I and we could pick apart the bible for its errors and omissions: one huge omission, of course, is that fact that the New World - North and South America - is not mentioned in the bible, nor is Australia. Nor are the planets mentioned, although the Greeks, I believe, knew of 6 of the 9 planets. The bible is mum on electricity, gravity, microscopic life, germs, the various causes of diseases, genetics, mutations, extinction, to name just a few etc...
But here is a warning: Ann is on very dangerous ground in her wholesale attack on science - she is dissing the Western tradition of empiricism, inquiry, progress, accumulation of knowledge and factual evidence and, of course, a huge body of research on evolution and biology, spanning 150 years.
Well, I'm back from my venture. Nothing much happening here with the churches where I live. I decided chasing 20 people while holding my sign and trying to figure out which of the 5 doors they might enter through was a little tedious, so I took myself out of town to the Catholic church. I missed their first service by 20 minutes.
As I sat there and debated what to do while I waited for church to get out and the next service to begin, I had a lightbulb moment. So I took myself to the local hardware store and bought paint and paint brushes and went to go paint the big rock off the highway. (main road)
Making a long story short, I eventually got the rock painted and it said, "Over 2500 died, Bush lied." (The Bush lied is squeezed in because the rock's surface wasn't easy to do do long messages.) Surprisingly, many cars were honking as I got the words painted. I hope they honked because they agreed with the message. (I didn't hear any "f-you's" out the window.
Then I went back to the Catholic church and I had missed their next entrance of worshippers, so I took myself to the next big rock in the next small town.
On that rock, I painted, "Blessed are the Peacemakers" and then within the yellow ribbons I had drawn with markers, I wrote, "Bring 'em HOME NOW!" (Of course if it rains, those markers will run right off! lol...but they did look nice for now.)
The next rock I drove to to paint, I opted to leave alone. How could I remove, "In memory of Ben" So that one is there.
The last big rock that I thought existed between two other towns I couldn't find. They either moved it or I was wrong to think it existed.
So that's my excitement for the day.
P.S. Madame, we'd love to hear what's happening in your neck of the woods. Please let us know.

But it's the godd*mn science that allows Coulter to be Coulter, instead of Arthur Coltrane or whatever his old name was.
Posted by: ralpheh at July 16, 2006 02:04 PM
As I mentioned to DiAnne in the previous thread, this is precisely why mainstream Christians are fed up, and some (me included) have left the faith altogether.
BTW, it's old news here in Koreatown. Remember that Sam Brownback, one of the subjects in this thread's starter, is a puppet of the Korean-American community, even though there are virtually no Koreans in Kansas. He wants you to support North Koreans because they are "Christians being forcibly aborted by an evil regime" - at the EXPENSE OF AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS.
From the previous thread:
Some of those liberals will have to experience the fact that they can't assume all minorities are automatically Democrats for themselves. I would have thought this last election would have convinced them. Campaigns are expensive, but with labor unions shrinking the Democrats cannot take one single black, Hispanic or other minority or immigrant vote for granted. (We have alot of new immigrants from Poland, Ukraine etc - as they become elligible to vote, who do they feel most represented by? It is not something to ignore, not with Condi & the neocons meddling in eastern Europe)
Posted by: DiAnne at July 16, 2006 08:40 AM
Unfortunately, whenever I talk about my experiences here in Koreatown, these politically correct bastards want to shut me up, because what I am telling them is a "fabricated racist lie." One of them has gone as far as to launch a vendetta against me, accusing me of doing a misinformation campaign on just about everything (including healthcare, workplace discrimination, and lots more).
If I am indeed telling "fabricated racist lies," then Sam Brownback must be a true champion of human rights, both North Korean AND American, and a progressive hero. But you know better than that (and we talked about a lot of this stuff during my visit to Seattle).
These liberals should thank themselves they are living in some liberal bubble like West Hollywood or Castro or Greenwich Village or Capitol Hill, instead of having to actually put up with all the ethnic reactionary politics and hatred out in places like Orange County, Sunnyvale, Flushing, or Bellevue. But guess what? At the current pace, these liberal bubbles will be crushed in the next few years if no REAL action is done.
As for your area, if we don't do much about the Ukrainian and Polish votes (and they are already very socially conservative and VERY homophobic), they will become the next Cubans and Koreans. And it won't be pretty. I don't want Seattle to become the next Miami or Los Angeles.

Thought of one more thing...
If Coulter really believes in all this stuff, I would have tremendous respect for her if she chose to exterminate herself and set a good example. After all, she is a castrated sodomite, and sodomites have no place in God's kingdom, which the dominionist Christians consider the US to be.
The fact that Coulter chooses to live on and spew her diatribe shows just how much of an airhead hypocrite that she is. And that so many Republican men continue to worship, and have crushes on, this sodomite shows just how much of hypocrites they themselves are.
Lieberman Hopes His Fate Isn't Sealed With a Kiss
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/071606X.shtml
On his increasingly difficult path to re-election, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman keeps getting kissed. And not lovingly. Kisses mock Mr. Lieberman, the incumbent Democrat, all over Connecticut - on signs, on buttons, even on giant parade floats. They commemorate the one President Bush appeared to plant on his cheek after last year's State of the Union address, a symbol, in the eyes of Mr. Lieberman's liberal critics, of an unforgivable alliance in support of the Iraq war.
Daily Show exposes Stevens' net neutrality expertise:
Eighty-two year old Sen. Ted Stevens' complete inability to comprehend the internet would be kind of cute, were it not for the fact that the following soundbites were taken from his 11-minute speech regarding a bill that would have increased network neutrality mandates.

{{{BTW, I saw a shorter sound byte of this clip at the tail end of one of the poli-spinmeister shows this morning. Don't be sucking down coffee or water or eating anything when you watch this! Like DumDum, Dickie, Rummy, & Condi, someone like Stevens is why one wishes their mothers had had miscarriages when they were pregnant with them - it's irresponsible to bring something that dumb into the world.}}}

@@@@@@@@@@@@@
I don't believe Coulter is a practicing Christian (i.e. a member of a church and a church-goer). I doubt that she has read or is familiar with the bible etc... I don't ever remember seeing Coulter wearing a crucifix - this, I believe, was done as prop for the photo op/bookcover.
Regarding the Lamont/Lieberman primary race:
It is interesting to not that the Democrat Senators who said they would campaign for Holy Joe - Boxer, Biden, Salazar - apparently have not done so:
******
........People close to Mr. Lieberman say he has been wounded by the conditional devotion he has received from most of his Democratic colleagues in the Senate. Mr. Lieberman says this is not true, that he is not bothered. "Probably some of my fellow senators are more uncomfortable about this than I am," he said. "Because truly, I haven't asked a single one of them for a commitment beyond the primary."
Even so, Senate Democrats have not exactly closed ranks around their colleague, either. It was impossible to watch Mr. Lieberman campaign at the Stamford pub on Monday and not consider his circumstances.
******A Democratic Senate colleague, Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware, was supposed to join him but did not make his train up from Delaware, so Mr. Lieberman was left to stump for himself.*******
"Irish-Americans have been great supporters of mine," Mr. Lieberman said in remarks to the small crowd, between prelunch sips of Guinness. He seemed, at the moment, every bit in his ethnic political element - a backslapping, blog-free retail setting characteristic of the Democratic Party he grew up in.
"The Irish tend not to be fair-weather friends," Mr. Lieberman said. "They're with you all the way."

I just saw Reverend Al Sharpton today.
Believe me, Ann Coulter is not a Christian.
Ally
Keep up the good work! When liberals put groups on pedestals and are overly "politically correct" they may also be guilty of a mentally lazy feat of stereotyping, something they really don't want to be doing. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism and self examination. There are selfish people, rigid people, unthinking people, compassionate people, aware people and so on in every type of group (gender, race, age, etc).
Any type of person can sell out to the right, or how does one explain an Alberto Gonzalez or a Condileezza Rice? Or an Ann Coulter?!
Al Sharpton is an antidote to the same thing happening to the black community. He sharply reprimanded the black middle class here not to forget their roots lest their children lose their way. (More to come)

Then Coulter uses the Christian talking points, only because Christianity has become the "official" religion of the neocon movement.
What a f'ing hypocrite indeed.
The sad thing is, she's far from alone in the trans "women" communities.

Or Ken Blackwell, or JC Watts, or my favorite, Reverend Moon...
More on Ann Coulter from Raw Story:
Appearing on the cover of her latest manifesto, Godless: The Church of Liberalism, adorned with a wooden crucifix necklace, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter takes on liberals on explicitly religious grounds. Invoking the sectarian rhetoric of the Christian right, Coulter denounces liberalism as "the opposition party to God," and "a comprehensive belief system denying the Christian belief in man's immortal soul."
Coulter fills the pages of Godless with attacks on Hollywood – a traditional Christian right boogeyman – and, quoting controversial Holocaust-denying columnist Joseph Sobran, assails public schools for teaching an "amalgam of liberalism, feminism, Darwinism, and the Playboy philosophy" rather than "Biblical truth." Coulter also calls the Episcopal Church, "barely even a church."
(BIG RED FLAG HERE:)*******Yet Coulter is curiously reticent in Godless about her own religious convictions. Nowhere in her book, for instance, does Coulter declare whether she belongs to a particular religious denomination, nor does she state where – or even if – she attends religious services. An April 17, 2005 article in Time Magazine by John Cloud provided a rare description of Coulter's attendance of church, as Cloud suggested that she has been a regular attendee of New York City's Redeemer Presbyterian Church, to which "she brings a lot of people…" ********
In his article, Cloud described accompanying Coulter to Redeemer......
When contacted by Raw Story, however, Redeemer Presbyterian's Communications and Media Director Cregan Cooke could not confirm that Coulter had ever attended services at the church.
"The only thing I have heard is hearsay that she is an attender" of Redeemer, Cregan told Raw Story. "Our database shows that she is not a member."
May Anne Coulter rot in hell.
Never mind that I have fasted for 3 days & made the mistake of drinking a glass of kir at Bastille Day. Well I couldn't drive but I can still type! I was South Dakota's State Typing Champ and once typed 200 words per minute (I got a small pewter typing pin to prove it).
I ran into Ron Holden who has a food blog. He had been to Paris and had dinner with Andree from Paris & he had read all about Yearly Kos in the press. He said the mainstream media is finally having to pick up the rock and look under it to find the internet alternative media.

Could it be that 'Merkin travelers--used to being the center of attention at home--make for bad tourists overseas? Not all, to be sure. But the self-absorbed loudmouths who aren't happy unless they have all the comforts of home (stall showers; non-fat fromage, double-tall Diet Cokes; double-wide king-sized beds; "customer-is-king" deferential service), well, maybe they should just stay home.

Redeemer Presbyterian Church? That's a familiar name to me.
When I went to Columbia University, that's where my "friends" at CCC and other campus ministries spent their nights and weekends. (BTW, the CCC at Columbia used to be called KCCC, K for Korean, but so many non-Korean Asians were converted that the K had to be dropped.)
And if Coulter attended that place, I would've been among the first to know. Coulter did NOT attend the place, at least during my college years (mid-1990s).

Yes indeed. I will check out his blog. Very insightful entry that you posted here.
BTW, comparing W to Zinedine Zidane is probably a gross insult to Zidane. I don't think he's actually killed anyone with his head butt!
The Christian right has been turned into a political machine, They taste power and it intoxicates them. This is the danger of a religious political admininstration.
Ann Coulter is setting herself as the virgin Madonna, and will take them down the road to their ultimate ruin. What Ann Coulter just did usually signals the top of the movement, and frmo here it slowly spirals out of control and downward.
Christians have lost all sense of direction, what their beliefs truly are, and what their mission on earth is. Coulter has picked up on this trend and is running with it, with herself as the Figure of St Ann(joan) of Ark.
When this movement fails, as it will....there will be millions of Christians left to ponder their beliefs, their actions, and untimately the cost to their faith for allowing power to blind them.
Coulter falsely suggested that Barry Lynn has no church
To further argue that liberal groups have not sufficiently aided in relief efforts in Louisiana and Mississippi, Coulter stated she would like to see a "breakdown" of "how much churches are contributing versus, say, Barry Lynn's church." When Hannity asked her what church she was talking about, Coulter explained that it was a "joke," suggesting that Lynn, the executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, was not associated with an actual church.
In fact, Lynn is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ (UCC). Moreover, the UCC created the "Hope Shall Bloom" Hurricane Katrina Fund in the immediate aftermath of the catastrophe. The church recently increased its fundraising goal for disaster relief to $3 million.
From the September 8 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes:
COLMES: Well, no one is blaming the hurricane on him. I think it's the response. And there's enough blame to go around, but you know when he says, "I didn't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees," And then Brown gets on --
COULTER: That's manifestly true.
COLMES: Thursday -- well not when he said it -- and says that he didn't know the evacuees were stranded at the Superdome until earlier that day.
COULTER: Look, I don't know what the details are about this.
[...]
HANNITY: Every prominent Democrat has politicized this before we even searched every home for dead bodies.
COULTER: Oh, yeah, and they're down -- Moveon.com is down protesting outside the White House today. How about putting together some evacuee bags? How about actually helping out? And you know, speaking of that, I think, you know, I'd like to see a breakdown at the end of this -- how much churches are contributing versus, say, Barry Lynn's church.
HANNITY: What church?
COULTER: Right, that was a joke.
HANNITY: Did he actually have one?
COULTER: Versus, you know, MoveOn.com [sic] with their putting their protest signs together. How much has George Soros given? How much has Sean Penn given?

Well Ally, now I am certainly curious about your words about Ann Coulter being trans.
I have only seen her once on tv, this past week, and she does have a rather large Adams Apple. Is there any other literature available that might provide more information on her in this regard that you know of?
The Christian bible says plainly that "real" or "true" Christians can be recognized by bearing these "fruits", or attributes:
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit (of the Spirit) is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness. While no one person can be expected to demonstrate these attributes 100% of the time, a very good indicator to whether or not they are trying to be a disciple of the Christian faith is whether or not they demonstrate those attributes a majority of the time.
The Christian bible tells it's readers to just look at the "fruits" (attributes) of those who claim to be Christians to distinguish the shallow, half-committed, or fake from the genuine followers of the faith.
There's nothing about goodness, love, joy, kindness, patience and peace (or faithfulness for that matter) in what those manipulating the Christians for their vote do with the power those votes enable.
People have been raised in authoritarian households and churches for centuries. They were taught to not question, just obey. Not to think, but rather to have their priest or pastor think for them. It is very much the sheeple mentality that NonnieO speaks of. Also the social pressure within the individuals societal structures is to conform.
I am seeing a movement where people are actually beginning to realize it's okay to think and speak and act for themselves. And some are beginning to do so. I look at it as kind of an evolution of sorts, but it is moving slowly right now.
Bush frustration sparks expletive
Monday, July 17, 2006;
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) -- U.S. President George W. Bush expressed his frustration over the situation in the Middle East by using an expletive in comments to British Prime Minister Tony Blair at the G8 summit in St. Petersburg Monday.
Not realizing his remarks were being picked up by a microphone at the summit of world leaders, Bush bluntly expressed his frustration with the actions of Hezbollah.
"See, the irony is what they really need to do is to get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this (expletive)," Bush told Blair in a discussion before the Group of Eight leaders began their lunch.
Bush's remarks were picked up by the summit's closed-circuit television, which was filming the leaders sitting down to eat.
Normally, the images are transmitted with sound that does not allow reporters to pick out individual comments. But in this case a microphone picked up Bush's comments to Blair.
Blair, whose remarks were not as clearly heard, appeared to be pressing Bush about the importance of getting international peacekeepers into the region.

Monkey
Tony Blair has a few problems of his own now.
TONY BLAIR met a key witness in the cash-for-peerages investigation after the police had begun their inquiry, it was claimed yesterday. The Prime Minister is believed to have had a personal conversation with Sir Gulam Noon on June 20 in Downing Street, about a month after the curry magnate was interviewed under caution by police. The news that Mr Blair met someone involved formally in a police investigation into Downing Street is likely to anger the police. Scotland Yard has tried to stop all contact with donors that might disrupt their investigation, including inquiries by cross-party select committees of MPs.
