Snakes On A Plame

Where is St. Patrick now that we need him?
One of the legendary saint's big claims to fame -- other than eventually becoming the nominal excuse for what a friend of mine once called "Mardi Gras for red-haired people with freckles," of course -- is that he is said to have chased all the snakes out of Ireland way back when.
Too bad he's not around today, because we could sure use somebody to chase all the snakes out of Washington. Our own national Babylon-on-the-Potomac is heavily over-infested with them these days, too.
Snakes to the left of us, snakes to the right of us. You can't cross the Mall in D.C. anymore without stepping over (or, preferably, on) some scaly serpent. You can't hit a K Street lobbyist with a wad of hundreds without staring some spineless viper right in the eyes.
And if you happen to work for the VP's office or the DOJ, well, you'll have to look straight up just to watch one of those nasty aspies slither on by over your head. The place really is crawling with snakes, especially after the last six years or so. Those nine guys in the black robes couldn't figure out how to count votes, but they were still adders anyway.
Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes? We hate snakes.
True, the serpent infestation in the people's colony of D.C. is nothing new. From Wilbur Mills to Mark Foley and all punters in between, Beltway-bounded pols and pundits have a long history of wrestling with the snakes in their heads (and in their beds) by taking a page from W. C. Fields' playbook: "I like to keep a bottle of stimulant handy in case I see a snake, which I also keep handy."
But during the imperialistic neocons' long reign of error in Washington, the viper surplus has reached new heights -- or, rather, new lows. With serpent-centric slitherers like Dick "Ready, fire, aim!" Cheney calling the shots, more sneaky snakes dared to crawl out from under their rocks during the B-43 years than had ever been seen before.
They tried to lay claim to Lincolnesque stature by rattling their sabers and condemning all who opposed their reckless militarism as treasonous modern-day Copperheads -- conveniently forgetting, of course, that not only is it impossible to stand as tall as he did while you're crawling around on your belly in the grass, but he's still the one who's got his own copper head on the penny today while they won't be worth a wooden nickel tomorrow.
While claiming to be killing for the sake of peace and supporting the troops by sending them off to die in the desert, the serpents in charge forgot the lessons of another pointless war they'd barely managed to slither their way out of less than 40 years before. Those who will not learn from the past are condemned to be defeated by it.
And in the eyes of history, they're going to be seen as a particularly nasty kind of venal venom merchant that Ambrose Bierce described so well: "ADDER, n. A species of snake. So called from its habit of adding funeral outlays to the other expenses of living."
For a while, it appeared as though the vipertisan publicans had managed to sink their fangs into the Constitution so deeply that they could never be removed. But times do change, and now it looks like there finally might be some light at the end of the scandals. Investigations are underway, and it doesn't look so good for Team Serpent right now.
Though the forked-tongued snake-oil salesmen in the White House and the Pentagon tried mighty hard to hide their military incompetence under a rock, not to mention under Iraq, the facts coming out of Capitol Hill these days have turned their duplicitious don't-asp-don't-tell policies so far around on itself that it's biting them on their own scaly tails now.
Look at Libby last month. Busted. Look at Gonzales this month. Busted. Look at Cheney. (Just don't look at him too long, or you'll turn to stone.) Then look at Valerie Plame this past week -- the very antithesis of busted, not to mention the cool, calm, carefully-coifed antithesis of Medusa too. The way she faced those vipers down brings to mind Harriet Tubman's oft-quoted adage: "Never wound a snake, kill it."
It appears that since taking back the legislature, the public-servant shephards of We-the-Sheeple seem to have finally ganged up to meet the wolves head-on. The other shoe has dropped, the game is afoot, the worms have turned, the mongeese have mustered, and the snakes are on the run. (And the metaphors are mangled, too. Boo, hiss.)
So do we still need to find a new St. Patrick to banish the slithering serpents from the swamplands of Washington for us? Maybe not so much now. I mean, it's not like Patrick Leahy is running around in a green surplice waving a clover to remind us of the holy three branches of government. He's a senator, not a saintator.
But you can bet that when Karl Rove finally has to stand there in front of Leahy and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, he'll probably be praying to God for a get-out-jail-free card anyway.
And as for the smirker-in-chief, the one who pretends that he's so conveniently clueless that he can't find his own asp with both hands and a GPS receiver? He'll be hoping that he can get out of office and go back to his desert rocks with his scaly skin intact.
And when that happens, my friends, it'll be only fitting that we should all gather round and raise our stout-filled glasses in a brogue-toned toast to the old Irish monk himself:
"St. Patrick was a gentleman, who thru strategy and stealth
Drove all the snakes from Ireland, here's a toasting his health.
But not too many, lest you lose yourself and then
You forget the good St. Patrick, and see those snakes again."

I actually like snakes a lot, but I know what you mean.

Protests going on ALL over today..in spite of weather !Waiting to hear from all in D.C,watching on C-SPAN. We have your backs !!
Sheesh,so much swamp of corruption can't remember from Monday to Friday what's happening.
How I wish "blue" states could just succeed from this regime. Then we could have a president(like JK)worthy to lead us,and we would have grateful hearts and NO WAR!!
I'm OFF in the rain to protest here..good to do something as our hearts are too heavy not to. What a mess !!

We are back from one cooolllddd day! But it was heartening to see so many families, students, vets, and military Moms and Dads out there.
Walking across the Memorial Bridge towards Arlington, we could see thousands stretched out in front of us, and many more behind us. The people standing on the sidelines, with their flags and nasty signs ("Peace Sucks" was an early favorite) seemed placid and slightly confused, except for the one or two who seemed chronically angry and who gave us the finger.
I have a few photos which I'll put up tomorrow, but it was really hard to get a sense of the whole thing. If you are watching it on C-Span, you have a better sense than we did.
Peace sure looks better than war-mongering; I'll say that. Some of those dudes jeering us were scary, nasty-looking guys. And some of the women seemed to have missed their valium shots this week.
Meanwhile we had grannies and old hippies, and teachers and Mayor Rocky Anderson, and soldiers and kids in strollers--you know, America.
It'll be cold as Cheney's heart here...

NPR just aired a brief story about the protest and of course, interviewed one of the "anti anti-war" protesters -- a woman who said she represented the real "patriots" and the rest of you were "traitors." Yawn. Same old line, same old lies, same old misplaced anger...
Don't these Republic Party women know about HRT?
BTW, Mayor Rocky Anderson has posted the transcript from the speech he gave at the march on the Pentagon today.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/3/17/171444/490
As patriots, we love and support our country – and we will not support a President who harms our nation and its people.
Our love for our nation – our regard for our Constitution – brings us here today to call for the impeachment of a President who has done, and continues to do, such tremendous harm to our country.
We have always been proud to distinguish ourselves from nations that kidnapped, disappeared, and tortured people. Now, under the Bush administration, we are becoming like them.

Anyway, DC protesters are on the main page of Comcast - "thousands" - also see that a bunch of people were gassed somehow in Iraq.
Just ate at a grocery that is big so has CNN Network 24/7 "news" so actually watched some of it. Timed some of the stories and they were 20-30 seconds long! Saw Virtual Fallujah, where you can gun from helicopters, with every actual building represented, continually updated. Perfect war porn. They said in excited voices that it won't be so long til guys can wage war using drones, controlling them with remotes. Sick.
Then the little scrolling across the bottom revealed the really big story of the day - work has already commenced on a feature film about the Life of Anna Nichole Smith (more famous in death than in life).
The war in Iraq is not the disease. Iraq is a symptom. The disease is arrogance.

In Seattle, there will be rallies downtown on both Sunday and Monday and also candle light vigils, occupation of both Senators offices & more. We're also going to Congressman McDermott's Potato Feed.
Just returning from a local hotel bar, where the vets and military families have gathered. Horror stories, about benefits gone astray, misdiagnoses, need for lawyers' fees for some of these young people, etc. abound. Lots of discussion about what would be helpful, which would, of course, be funding, organization, oversight, and communication.
Charlie Anderson and Garrett Repenhagen, Juan Torres, and many others were there, discussing next steps. Anyone got a spare million dollars or so? There is a need for helping out...
About to take food over to Code Pink, where planning for actions over the next few days is already in progress. God, I wish you were all here too...

TENS OF THOUSANDS DENOUNCE IRAQ WAR AT WASHINGTON RALLY
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Tens of thousands of protesters marched in Washington against the
Iraq war Saturday, taking their message on placards, "US out of Iraq now," to the Pentagon's doorstep ahead of the fourth anniversary of the US invasion.
Demonstrators from across the United States gathered in a cold winter day to descend on the US Defense Department offices and decry the conflict that has killed more than 3,200 US soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians.
As war opponents trickled into downtown Washington for the rally, organized by the peace group Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER), Vietnam war veterans wearing black leather jackets and their families gathered nearby for a counter-demonstration.
Some war supporters confronted the peace activists, tearing up and spitting on anti-war signs while chanting: "USA! USA!"
Washington police do not give crowd estimates, but an AFP correspondent said tens of thousands of people could be seen at the march.

Just back from the Code Pink house where we dined on fried chicken, mac and cheese, creamed spinach lentils, homemade mead, and cake, and plotted the week's events.
Gael Murphy had her tires slashed while the march was going on--some of those mature counter-demonstrators took ill with the pink thing, I guess. She (Gael) was in good form tonight however, so all's well. Wait until you see the footage Lori took of Gael speaking calmly to the police today, telling them to take care of and for the young demonstrators. Once Lori has it up, I will link to it, so you can see peace in action.

DUBAI (AFP) - Dubai port operator DP World has completed the sale of its US operations, drawing the curtain on its controversial investment in the United States, the official WAM news agency reported Saturday.
The state-owned company said it has finalised on Friday a deal to sell its wholly owned subsidiary P O Ports North American (POPNA) to AIG Global Investment Group.
It did not disclose the price.
An Internet statement said the sale "fulfills the commitment made by DP World last year to sell its US assets to an American buyer."

From Earth Times:
Thousands joined a demonstration in Washington Saturday against the Iraq War while a much smaller group protested the protesters.
The anti-war march from the Lincoln Memorial to the Pentagon followed the route of a 1967 march against the Vietnam War, the Washington Post reported. The crowd included families, high school students, veterans and veterans of the 1960s anti-war movement.
(snip)
.The marchers took an hour to cross the bridge over the Potomac River to Virginia. Near Arlington National Cemetery, a group waiting for the march held up a banner that said: Go to hell traitors. You dishonor our dead on hallowed ground.
While the march was largely peaceful and police kept the two groups separate, there were some arrests at the Pentagon when some protesters refused to return to the area set aside for the march.
Counter-protesters guarded the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, saying they were afraid the anti-war group would try to vandalize it.

Take Karl Rove.
To the nearest tall tree with a low limb.
What’s the difference between Karl Rove and a dead armadillo beside the road?
The armadillo doesn’t try to convince you it was killed by terrorists.
How do you know if Karl Rove is hiding in your house?
He’s in the closet.
How many Karl Roves does it take to change a light bulb?
Two. One to change the bulb and one to blame the liberals because the old one burned out.
What’s the difference between Karl Rove and a vacuum cleaner?
There isn’t any. They both make too much noise, they both dig up dirt and they both SUCK!
What’s the difference between Karl Rove and a Huggie?
They’re both full of crap, but the Huggie doesn’t leak it.
What’s the difference between Karl Rove and a coral snake.
A coral snake might have a li-i-i-tle bit of a conscience.
What’s the difference between Karl Rove and alligator skin boots?
The alligator is still inside Karl’s boots.
Where does Karl Rove sleep?
Anywhere that’s discreet.
What’s the difference between Karl Rove and a four-star restaurant?
Four stars.
Why does Karl Rove keep a copy of the U.S. Constitution next to his bed?
Saves tissue.
Why did Karl Rove pretend to be drowning at the beach.
He needed a date.
Why did Karl Rove refuse to put his hands in the cement at Grauman’s Chinese Theater?
He was afraid he’d uncover the body.
What is the difference between Karl Rove and a rock?
The rock is more concerned about global warming.
How did Karl Rove get rich?
He invented a gay bar that no one can be seen entering or leaving.
What’s the distinguishing feature of the Karl Rove Escort Service?
There’s no armor plating on your date, either.
How did Karl Rove serve his country?
With fries and a medium Coke.
What’s the difference between Karl Rove and a hurricane?
The hurricane doesn’t blame the Democrats for all the destruction.
What was the meanest trick Karl Rove played on George Bush?
He disguised himself as a pretzel.
What did Karl Rove do on his vacation this summer?
He attacked swimmers on the Florida Gulf Coast.
What’s the difference between Karl Rove and Benedict Arnold?
When Arnold sold his nation’s secrets, he had the decency to leave the country.
from http://www.rudepundit.com
Rove also went on the attack about new media outlets, like blogs and YouTube, but what he said actually sounded like he was writing his own epitaph. See, everyone wants more content, and, Rove said, "The tyranny of this chase for more and newer is encouraging people to cover things that would normally draw little or no attention." Like, you know, the Machiavellian machinations of a toad-like man hunching in the shadow of a president.
But Rove deferred to the judgment of the people when it comes to such manipulations: "The masses are not asses, they will figure it out. You can underestimate their interest, but if you underestimate their intelligence, you're making a big mistake."
That's what should be engraved on Rove's political tombstone. Or on a sign nailed to the wall of his prison cell.

From NPR Morning Edition, current: http://www.npr.org - listen
The White House missed a deadline Friday night to notify Congress if it would allow three key officials to testify voluntarily about their roles in the dismissal of eight United States attorneys. The administration said it hoped to have an answer for Congress by Tuesday.
Congressional leaders say that they might subpoena the officials if the White House does not comply with the testimony request.
Turned on tv this morning to see if anything new was on the "news" and lo and behold I was on Faux News.
Kerry was on, and Kerry was great!!! He was very composed, and told it right on.
For those of you that missed it, go to Fox News dot com and look for the video or transcript.
They even ran his credits under his name at the beginning of the interview. He would never have gotten that if he were running for President.
My paraphrase: He told them that one of the biggest reasons he decided not to run in '08 was basically because the media sucked as far as being very unfair to him in '04. I couldn't agree more.
Frank Rich's op-ed column in today's NY Times isn't available from that site without a subscription, but you can read the whole piece at the link provided with this excerpt:
---------------
THE IDES OF MARCH 2003
Tomorrow night is the fourth anniversary of President Bush’s prime-time address declaring the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In the broad sweep of history, four years is a nanosecond, but in America, where memories are congenitally short, it’s an eternity. That’s why a revisionist history of the White House’s rush to war, much of it written by its initial cheerleaders, has already taken hold. In this exonerating fictionalization of the story, nearly every politician and pundit in Washington was duped by the same “bad intelligence” before the war, and few imagined that the administration would so botch the invasion’s aftermath or that the occupation would go on so long. “If only I had known then what I know now ...” has been the persistent refrain of the war supporters who subsequently disowned the fiasco. But the embarrassing reality is that much of the damning truth about the administration’s case for war and its hubristic expectations for a cakewalk were publicly available before the war, hiding in plain sight, to be seen by anyone who wanted to look.
By the time the ides of March arrived in March 2003, these warning signs were visible on a nearly daily basis. So were the signs that Americans were completely ill prepared for the costs ahead. Iraq was largely anticipated as a distant, mildly disruptive geopolitical video game that would be over in a flash.
Now many of the same leaders who sold the war argue that escalation should be given a chance. This time they’re peddling the new doomsday scenario that any withdrawal timetable will lead to the next 9/11. The question we must ask is: Has history taught us anything in four years?
