Gonzales Testifying

Alberto Gonzales testifying on Capitol Hill. It's on C-SPAN 3 right now. Senator Arlen Spector laying out the options for enforcing their Congressional authority and doing a nice job of it.

It's worth catching it now, or I will try to post a link to it tomorrow for the Congressional record.

A bit of liveblogging here: Spector jamming Gonzales against the wall for the "going to the hospital in the middle of the night to see a man who has ceded his authority, it's very disturbing, you will have a chance to explain that, althought there's no conceivable explanation I can think of..." (I am paraphrasing, but not by much).

Swearing Gonzales in now...

Shorter Gonzales: Terror!! Terror!! Terror!! WE need to revise FISA. Oh, and keeping kids safe. I'm really good at that.

You know, stupid and dishonest is not an attractive combination, and every Senator at that tale who voted to confirm this Keystone Kriminal must be wondering how they could have missed his basic and underlying level of incompetence and versimilitude.

Also, ignoring every topic that the Chairman and the ranking member raised in their opening does not bode well for a pretty morning.

Tune in here to link to streaming.

Favorite rhetorical question so far: Arlen Spector to Gonzales- "Is your department working?"

UPDATE: I am just, again, have to say it, shocked at how stunningly stupid, and by stupid, I mean of meager intellectual capacity, education, curiosity and insight, Alberto Gonzales.

Also, this is being liveblogged here at Kos.

UPDATE: Worth noting--Gonzales testified, in explaining how he came to be a Ashcroft's bedside, that his appearence arose out of a meeting earlier of "the gang of eight" earlier that day in which he informed those present that Comey would not approved continuing the FISA program in its current form. Here's my question: Who in that meeting suggested that the Attorney General and the Chief of Staff Andrew Card should visit the bedside to convince him to approve a program that was disapproved? Whose idea was it to begin with, and who approved, and how did that approval happen?

UPDATE: Ben Cardin trying to follow up on this, by pointing out that the meeting was confidential, just like the matters that the White House is protecting by Executive privelege. Pointing out that the "protection of information" is very selective and "self-serving for the White House", but not getting to the point of"what in the world were Andy Card and I doing that night", as Gonzales himself describes it.

Anyone else notice how CSPAN is consistantly putting anything of actual importance on the channels most people do not get...?

Namely Cspan2 and 3

Carol said:

Yeah Christy, I noticed that. At least there is on-line streaming. That's the only way I can watch.

Spector was really blasting away.

Thank God Lindsey Lohan got arrested, or else CNN would have to actually fufill their purpose.

Watch the story developing about how Rove tried to influence even nonpartisan groups such as the Peace Corps to tow the Bush administration line and work toward a permanent one-party system goal. Saw it at TruthOut and Talking Points Memo and want to get into it to read but will spend most of the day in the woods without electricity and with kids.

Rove and the others need to be frog-marched out, rather than sprint to the finish, as they plan.

Lindsey Lohan should keep the cable news busy for a couple of weeks at least.

Well, you cannot have an Attorney General much smarter than the President. The pressure that would create causes ripples of doubt and disbelief. It could trigger the slow downward spiral of the dollar, as International financiers lose trust and confidence in the leadership of the United States.

On the other hand a stupid AG is a get out of Jail card, allowing freedom to wreak havoc worldwide without consequence, roam the earth searching for targets like an immature cruise missile.

The White house has become a nursery for power mad adolescents.

Noticed that... I get CSPAN 2, not 3.

And agreed about Lohan!

No offense, but time for lip service is way past due.

Seemingly misleading slant on a repeat poll, and I first read it in an Indian paper, then the New York Times. It's a slight increase in number favoring original Iraq invasion over last May, and the titles are very misleading on these articles. I think that it's part of the PR push by the administration, and connected with the meeting they had with journalists after which positive articles began to appear about Bush.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/24/us/24poll.html

On the other hand, blogs, YouTube and the internet in general appear to be playing a larger role in this election even than in 2004. I read recently that the Pentagon had hired people to influence even bloggers. & MSM is already opining on YearlyKos, which isn't until late next week.

Glad you all are monitoring what's happening with Gonzo - I can't from here but hope to catch highlights (or lowlights) later. It's never been up to the President to authorize war and it's never been up to the Justice Department to assign only judges favorable to the Executive Branch, and it's never been up to a White House strategist to monitor bipartisan agencies connected with foreign policy to make sure they are in lock-step with the White House - not even under Nixon or Reagan - not until these guys.

Seems like the general public goes after the horses once they're out and scattered, rather than keeping the barn door closed. Gore wasn't appreciated enough in time, Gingrich and his successors weren't stopped, and articles are coming out now which say Kerry was right. (Thanks to mbk who is collecting and forwarding them).

Thanks for the numbers. I will use cell phone minutes during lunch even if in the woods, if can get reception.
