Live Blogging the Impeachment Action

I am sitting on the floor of a phone booth, so the police will not make me stand and blog. Lisa from C-ville is standing in front of it, hoping I will not be noticed.

I have never seen anything like this one, folks.

There are HUNDREDS of people lining the hallway to John Conyers' office. Cindy and a few others are inside, speaking to the staff, we assume. But the scene is incredible--people have come from all over the country to deliver the message that we can not tolerate illegal actions and an unConstitutional government.

Richard has the camera and many photos--but he is up close and I cannot get to him. But we promise you photos as soon as possible.

I will update this as I can...

But hello to all from the center of democracy! We are taking it BACK.

Oh--and CALL!

Phone Chairman Conyers at 202-225-5126 and ask him to start the impeachment of Dick Cheney; and phone your own Congress Member at 202-224-3121 and ask them to immediately call Conyers' office to express their support for impeachment. Your Congress Member might be one of the three needed, not just to keep impeachment activists out of jail but to keep this nation from devolving into dictatorship.

THE HALLWAY. Listen, everyone: it was like this in both directions. If these people can do this for democracy, please support them and call your Members. Tell them you stand with the true Americans, many of whom were arrested today.

That's it. There were many more arrested, but it was hard to get down the hall. All the photos are by Richard Bell, and all the arrests were courtesy of your government.

If they seem confused about who the criminals are, CALL THEM AND TELL THEM SO.

Col. Ann Wright just reported that the negotiations are hard inside. The Conyers people are asking for another meeting and we are saying, "no." NOW.

This is going to be a very long haul. CALL and please email others to call.

Cindy Sheehan just left John Conyer's office and announced that Rep. Conyers is NOT going to move on impeachment.

The crowd is very uspet.

Rev. Yearwood announced that the government has failed the people and the people must act NOW. This needs to be spread everywhere.

PEOPLE MUST CALL.

The phone must NOT STOP RINGING. POST THIS EVERYWHERE!!

There are hundreds here willing to risk arrest.

There are thousands of you out there. WILL YOU SPEAK UP???

Please spread this everywhere.

Anyone...?

Christy,

NEVERMIND!!!!!

Ralpheh,
They took Cindy out first, and probably David Swanson and Zool. We had to go down a flight and around the building to get those photos up there. We got the ones of the Rev. and the Col. only because the doors opened up and there they were.

I rode down with them and asked them if they had any messages to deliver.

The Rev. turned to me and said "Power to the people."

I think that pretty much sums it up.

And we, the people, are not using the power we have.

YET.

Ralpheh said:

Just called Conyers office:

The talking point they are using is that "only" 13 people have signed on to H.R. #333 calling for Cheney's impeachment and, therefore, bring up an impeachment bill would be a waste of time because the bill would not pass the House.

I am curious if this is how the Watergate impeachment got out of the House Judiciary Committee. Maybe someone who knows offhand can post this information or I can do some historical research.

Ralpheh said:

CALL NOW - CONYERS OFFICE IS STILL OPEN

nate newton said:

Ha ha ha! It's pretty funny that you are being arrested. Why are they arresting you? Probably because Conyers is sick of listening to you retards. Thanks for the great show. I haven't laughed so hard in days.

Ralpheh said:

BTW:

Were any big media reporters there? The WAPO or the NY Times etc... It would be nice to get a newspaper article out of this protest.

I asked Conyers office about the "demand" that more Representatives have to co-sign H.R. #333 - I said, "How many Reps have to sign on to the HR-333 before Conyers would do anything?" The young woman wouldn't answer. Then I asked is there a written press from Conyers to the effect that 13 co-signers is not enough for the resolution to go forward. At that point, she hung up on me.

Also, from Silence is Complicity's thread at Kos:

They are not answering the phones at Pelosi's office or Conyers. IT's time to move on to the next Reps on the Judiciary committee or your own Rep. Also, consider, like me, making an excursion to your local office or local media. You don't have to have civil disobedience but at least show them your views in person! Invite the neighbors, grab a crowd. Take the kids.

Consider writing a ton of LTE right now since their answering machines are full. Also, consider calling your neighbors and long lost friends to get them involved too.

Sit outside with an Impeach sign. They need our momentum. You don't have to get arrested but please just take it out to the general public and the media.

The 0AG and Justice Dept will not be allowed?

That should be the first count of Bush' count for impeachment. The Justice Dept and the AG are supposed to be independent of the Executive branch and just like Nixon firing Elliot Richardson in '73 and causing a constitutional crisis so should this same statent from the Bush Whitehouse. The AGs office much to Clinton's consternation acted independently to enforce the role of law and so should this Justice Dept. To do anything less undermines the Constiyution and Rule of law which this administration does not care about or follow.

And thirdly as a lawyer I have proposed that Article 1 deal with Bush's intereving with Gonzalez's trip to the hospital to get the AG's signature while under anesthesia to a policy he firmly opposed. I believe in the Rule of Law something we heard over and over again in the nineties. Undermining an independent Judiciary most prosecutors I have spoken with is despicable even if not criminal which is not required to impeach. Read the Constitution.

We must have made an impact of some sort.

And to be continued... Tomorrow: Gonzo Goes to Congress again.

From The Hill:

Gonzales will be return to the hot seat Tuesday for a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on general oversight of the DoJ. Several GOP senators panned his April testimony about the U.S. attorney firings amid calls for his resignation. But Gonzales and President Bush for months have resisted, even as evidence has mounted that top officials were involved in politicizing the hiring of career employees.

In a 26-page statement submitted to the Judiciary Committee in anticipation of his testimony, Gonzales touted the DoJ’s efforts to fight terrorism; combat violent crime and protect children from predators; investigate and prosecute illegal drug trafficking; curb identify theft; protect the border; and fight illegal immigration.

At the end of the document, Gonzales spent five paragraphs on the U.S. attorneys scandal that for months has plagued the department.

“I believe very strongly that there is no place for political considerations in the hiring of our career employees or in the administration of justice,” he said.

“As such, these allegations have been troubling to hear. From my perspective, there are two options available in light of these allegations. I would walk away or I could devote my time, effort and energy to fix the problems.

Since I have never been one to quit, I decided that the best course of action was to remain here and fix the problems.”

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), one of the attorney general’s chief critics, immediately ridiculed Gonzales’s intention to remain at the department.

“There are probably only two people on Earth who think the Attorney General ought to stay: Alberto Gonzales and President Bush,” Schumer said in a release. “As long as he’s in charge, the Justice Department, the rule of law and America will suffer.”

At first I wasn't going to post this article because you have all been working so hard to get your elected reps to move on Impeachment. So, perhaps it's not a good time.

However, the author of the "independent report into the US military's detention, trial and conviction of Australian David Hicks on terrorism charges has labelled the process farcical." It makes damning allegations against the process, the judges and George W Bush. In that sense, it couldn't be more relevant at this time.

It shows that the tentacles of octopus courts reach and affect the citizens of the world. I really would like to know whatever happened to the 15 year old boy who was incarcerated in Guantanamo many years ago. What kind of man have they turned that child into, I wonder? All that time with no contact, no love, just hate and abuse? Or is he dead and nobody thought to tell the world? But that's another situation and it's for another time.

Hicks trial 'shambolic'
July 24, 2007 - 1:45PM

An independent report into the US military's detention, trial and conviction of Australian David Hicks on terrorism charges has labelled the process "farcical".

The report also attacked the Howard Government's unwavering support of the Bush Administration's military commission system.

You don't forget. My view is that there are way too many representatives in governments all over the world. When they flagrantly ignore their voters, the next election is the time to send them away. You elect someone who realises that you mean business. Someone who will do what the people want - or face dismissal.

You keep track of who they are and campaign hard against them. Put in independents if necessary. If any rep ignores the will of the people, he/she does not earn their salary and needs to be removed.

Nixon stood suddenly for peace, after a visit in the USSR, that would have meant the end of the cold-war. That's the only reason the MIC stepped in, hired the Watergate-Burglars (eh Dallas-JFK-Tramps)and forced him to resign. Never ever was impeachment rule empowered for traitors, murders or other misdeamors of the rulers. http://www.commondreams.org/views04/1207-26.htm

I presume you meant:
America needs to wake up and understand geopolitics do NOT need USA in the equation any longer.

Pretty grim assessment and not that hard to back up, so where do we go from here? Ideas?

Yes, the best idea is to stand and act as Americans. Take back our Nation, Our Government and Constitution.

People getting arrested is a start. More people need to get arrested. More people need to demonstrate and shut the Capital down. It is OUR government, and what has been taken from us, we must take back for force of assembly.

Iraq is a symptom, the desease lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The cure exists within the framework of the Constitution; Impeachment.

And Woz, the boy being held in Gitmo was 'suppossedly' released a few years ago and went back to Afghanistan. No news of where he went from there. Most likely to the Taliban.

And I want you to know I am ashamed of what has happened to David Hicks. My country never should have treated anyone that way.

No wonder the trolls feel desperate.

'As the president and Congress spar over war policy, both receive negative marks from the public for their handling of the situation in Iraq. But by a large margin, Americans trust Democrats rather than the president to find a solution to a conflict that remains enormously unpopular. And more than six in 10 in the new poll said Congress should have the final say on when to bring the troops home.

The president has steadfastly asserted his power as commander in chief to make decisions about the war, but his posture is now viewed by majorities of Democrats, independents and even Republicans as too inflexible. Asked whether Bush is willing enough to change policies on Iraq, nearly eight in 10 Americans said no."

I seem to remember SOMEONE charging President Bush with "stubborn incompetence" over and over and over again back in '04, but anything beyond a 2 second attention span and the ability to actually think are no longer standard equipment on todays general populace.

Who's Sorry Now?

Thanks Christy - about the young boy and about the David Hicks demonstration of the justice you have when you're not having any justice.

U.S. may stay in Iraq to '09, based on new plan
Strategy gives more time to establish security; at odds with Congress' push

Updated: 55 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - AP - A revised U.S. military plan envisions establishing security at the local level in Baghdad and elsewhere in Iraq by summer 2008, leading one year later to security conditions nationwide that Iraqi forces are capable of sustaining, U.S. officials said Tuesday.

Known as the Joint Campaign Plan, developed in tandem by Gen. David Petraeus and his political counterpart in Baghdad, Ambassador Ryan Crocker, it reflects a timetable starkly at odds with the push by many in Congress to wind down U.S. involvement in a matter of months.

The snippets I saw tonight, of the Dem Presidential hopefuls, answering questions from the people, Obama outstripped Hilary, I thought. Asked if they would talk to those leaders in the Middle East who had been ignored by the Bush administration, during their first year. Obama said definitely. To stop talking is stupid. Hillary said No - not in the first year. More of what's happening now - talk it to death and then do nothing.
