Putting the Heat on Lomborg -- UPDATED

First they said global warming wasn't happening at all. When the evidence got too overwhelming, they said global warming was happening, but that human beings had nothing to do with it. But a growing body of evidence washed this position away too.

Now we've got the 3rd generation of deniers, as packaged in a new book, Cool It: A Skeptical Environmentalist Looks at Global Warming by Danish statistician Bjorn Lomborg.

I'm launching a new web site today that takes on Lomborg's arguments--Putting the Heat on Lomborg--and I'd love for you to come over, learn more about why Lomborg's book is such a threat to stopping climate change, and just put the website through its paces.

Lomborg admits that global warming is happening, and that humans have something to do with it, but that it will cost more than it's worth to stop climate change, and it might even be a good thing. Register and log in and leave a question, a comment, or a website you like that deals with climate change.

Lomborg's first book, The Skeptical Environmentalist, was a best-seller in 2001. He claimed to have examined all of the major environmental threats and to have determined that they were all being exaggerated by environmental groups: overfishing, overpopulation, global warming, clean water, you name it.

Now Lomborg is back, and once again he's selling a lot of books, hitting the #1 slot in Amazon's rankings for books about public policy, about climate change, and about conservation.

At Putting the Heat on Lomborg, you'll find the best analyses of how Lomborg has constructed this latest farrago of edited quotes and selective use of data to produce the results he wants. And you'll see how insidious this kind of argument can be in a media world of 6-second sound bites. The site also includes, I'm happy to report, some inspiring examples of what can happen when journalists take their responsibilities seriously and do their homework before walking into an interview with Lomborg.

This site is designed to pool information about Cool It and the ongoing campaign to diminish the importance of global warming. Working together, sharing ideas and links, we can fight back against the subtle disinformation about global warming that this book is injecting into the public debate.

UPDATE:

Just wanted to let you know that the DCP website will be unavailable at some point during the next 24 hours so that I can install the new DCP 2.0. It's just hours and minutes away from happening.

OVER the past few years the questions have been asked ever more forcefully whether global climate changes occur in natural cycles or not, to what degree we humans contribute to them, what threats stem from them and what can be done to prevent them. Scientific studies demonstrate that any changes in temperature and energy cycles on a planetary scale could mean danger for all people on all continents.

It is also obvious from published research that human activity is a cause of change; we just don’t know how big its contribution is. Is it necessary to know that to the last percentage point, though? By waiting for incontrovertible precision, aren’t we simply wasting time when we could be taking measures that are relatively painless compared to those we would have to adopt after further delays?

Maybe we should start considering our sojourn on earth as a loan. There can be no doubt that for the past hundred years at least, Europe and the United States have been running up a debt, and now other parts of the world are following their example. Nature is issuing warnings that we must not only stop the debt from growing but start to pay it back. There is little point in asking whether we have borrowed too much or what would happen if we postponed the repayments. Anyone with a mortgage or a bank loan can easily imagine the answer.

I've been watching the collection of actual facts about global warming that Richard has been doing for the past seven years and the dismissal of those facts by such tale-spinners as Lomborg is infuriating. A friend wrote me last week:

"I am so worried about the polar bears."

I wrote back:

"The polar bears are f***ed."

It feels like every thing we do matters, but then dissipates. Perhaps I am feeling that way because I am sitting outside the office of Brian Baird, who is explaining to my friend Linda why he changed his mind about Iraq.

As I sit here, hoards of white-guys-in-suits walk by and glance at me suspiciously (altho' I am not wearing pink). They are lobbyists, they have agendas, like we do, but they are better paid and well-known to all here.

I keep thinking about the dark planet in "A Wrinkle in Time." I can't help it.

Some days, we ARE the polar bears, searching for some friendly terrain before we drown. Some days, ice floes appear.

There actually is a simple solution to global warming.

Trees.

And it could completely reverse the trend within 5 to 10 years if we plant enough of them.

Funny to think such small seeds can save all of our lives and the lesser animals too.

But, we can't just go planting trees, cause then people might call us treelovers.

UPDATE Before the vote today, changes were made to the original amendment, with paragraphs three and four taken out completely. This paragraph was also added at the end:

“Secretary of Defense Robert Gates stated on September 16, 2007 that “I think that the administration believes at this point that continuing to try and deal with the Iranian threat, the Iranian challenge, through diplomatic and economic means is by the preferable approach. That the one we are using. We always say all options are on the table, but clearly, the diplomatic and economic approach is the one that we are pursuing.”

And Obama and McCain clearly didn't want to be on record for this and have it used against them.

Nothing much to say about the Liar-Express but since Obama has made muce about the the IWR vote, this seems rather pathetic that he didn't stand up to be counted on an issue so important.

Obama may be great on the diplomatic front. Don't get me wrong on that account. He's a very engaging person. And he is intellegent. I believe he's very much a person other countries will feel they can trust.

All I'm saying is that in 2002, he did not have to vote on the IWR and yet he has been using it as a campaign approach to hammer at others for their vote. I just think he should have voted. And I also already feel I know how McCain would have voted. But I don't know that about Obama.

An Australian has told how he and his friends saw demonstrators shot and wounded during yesterday's military crackdown on democracy protests in Rangoon.

The man, who asked not to be identified as he feared for his safety, described the view from his hotel room in the capital as the protests intensified.

"All afternoon a line of army trucks and assorted vans had been on the road below since soldiers killed and dispersed the crowds," he wrote in an email to The Age.

PELOSI - IMPEACHMENT OFF THE TABLE;

PELOSE TO BE CHALLENGED BY SHEEHAN???

The Democrats have caved, once again, to the Republicans on the war in Iraq, so it is time in MHO to take extreme measures: pushing and shaming the Dems into doing the right things. I think this could be accomplished by running an anti-war Dem against Pelosi in 2008 or an anti war candidate - like Sheehan - against Pelosi in the general election (or both!!!).

This would cause something of a media circus - which the media likes; they don't have to work hard they just set up their cameras and take pictures/record.

Bid to change Calif. vote rules stalls
By MICHAEL R. BLOOD - Associated Press Writer

Sacramento Bee

"LOS ANGELES -- Several influential Republicans resigned abruptly from a political committee established to change the way California awards its electoral votes in presidential elections, a proposal Democrats claim would rig the 2008 race.

"The shake-up dealt a devastating blow to the attempt to change the rules. The committee was already struggling because of poor fundraising, and even Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had said he was dubious about the idea of changing the rules."

"Sometimes it just doesn't work out," said Kevin Eckery, a spokesman for Californians for Equal Representation who resigned Thursday. "The money hasn't been coming in the way it needs to come in."

This is good news as long as someone like Murdock doesn't come to their rescue. Perhaps this insanity will die a slow death.

Sheehan was supposed to run against Feinstein for the US Senate in 2006. But that didn't happen.

I won't hold my breath for Sheehan running against Pelosi either. Sheehan is no longer a Democrat, and without the backing of a party apparatus, that makes it that much harder for her to run. (Similarly, running as a Green will be uphill too.) Besides, she has all the makings of a single-issue candidate; a successful candidate needs a broad platform on multiple issues.

AND these are the supporters! Imagine what the true 'sheeple' think.

Matthew Carnicelli said:

Kudos to Mario Cuomo for offering a coherent, cogent Constitutional argument today (on Hardball) on why Bush must be denied any leeway whatsoever with regard to attacking Iran.

The Framers knew exactly what they were doing when they stipulated that only Congress could declare war. Even George Washington, who everyone knew would be the first President, supported this provision. They understood all too well what could happen with the wrong man running the Executive Branch.

Christy said:

The sheeple are thinking 'Why in the crap is Nancy taking large and important pieces of the United States Constitution 'off the table'...?

Against ALL enemies... foriegn AND DOMESTIC.

Like Matthew says, the Framers knew EXACTLY what they were doing.

And as far as what is going right...well georgie was given another NINE BILLION DOLLARS of the sheeples money yesterday to kill more people in Iraq for no real or moral reason at all.

Oh. And repellican publications are now reporting 'War with Iran is IMMINENT'..!!! Holy f*cking cow, that is insane!

Before we look forward, we might want to try to escape the HELL that is currently the reality.

Nancy Pelosi could single handedly change the course of US Policy and human history, but so far... nope, she herself will engage in some Constitutional dismantling.

Ok. Enough, is enough, I just pissed myself off for even having to think about it.

She has a job to do which so far she has refused to do. Against ALL ENEMIES.

She could be a hero anytime, it is hardly me stopping her.

There is only one obvious answer. She don't need anymore. It is all right there. We can prove how when where why and all of the whos', too. It is happening now, in our faces every day our kids die for it. Our 'enemies' kids too. And their wives and their mothers and entire freaking families being slaughtered while Nancy helps a tyrant COMPLETELY dismantle the United States Constitution in the name of some obscure personal political calculation.

What is going right? The first strike against Iran will not only set off a global war but a holy war that will last for thousands of years.

We have not really stopped georgie one single time. Nothing stops this bastard, not laws, not humanity, not morals, NOTHING.

She could stop him dead in his tracks yet every day we watch this man who has committed open TREASON against Us and WAR CRIMES against others get away with it.

Or maybe she is being blackmailed.

Maybe that was the cost of her Speakership. God knows why, but at this point it has simplified. Either you are for the United States Constitution, or you are aiding and abetting a war criminal who is dismantling it.

I don't give a crap if she stands with me and all other lovely democrats...I mean, who cares? Her job is to protect the United States Constitution.

And for some as yet unknown reason she is not only hesitating but outright refusing to do so.

I like Pelosi, but something unseen and terrifying is happening, and she is firmly engrossed in it.

But unlike all the rest of We, she can actually stop it with one single leap of faith in our country.

I am sorry I totally went off on her like that, but I do not regret what I actually said because I believe every word of it to be true.

She needs to take that damn leap and quick, or we will be killing Iranians very soon. And the Afghan and Iraqi dead count will only accelerate.

We are the Polar Bears. She has a choice.

I am tired of excuses for her making choices that ultimately enable a mass murdering BUTCHER.

Ok. stop Christy. Breathe. I hate her, she sucks. I know you do. Just stop. Go paint. No. I want to kill my computer and call Pelosis office again. No. Don't do it. She is not worth it. YES SHE IS.

Here's one: Liberty walk

Let me start by saying that we are the biggest patriots you will ever find.....

Over the last several years, my wife, Heather and I have researched the internet and watched many documentaries regarding our nation's issues. This has become our favorite past time, but brings a lot of heartache as well. We are very passionate about our country and its people, but we see a nation divided. We decided we could not take it anymore. We had to do something about it!

Our initial plan was to walk around the country, by ourselves, and simply talk to people. Try to understand their views. After laying out the initial plan, I decided to post our idea on MySpace, to tell our story and generate interest. We did not think anything would really come of it. We started receiving a few "good luck" and "proud of you" messages, but that was it and that was all we were wanting. We were having a blast just telling our story to people, letting them know what we were about to do and why.

Our initial idea, that was posted on MySpace, was about the two of us walking one mile for every word in our US Constitution. We stated that we wanted to walk in the shape of a star, symbolizing "hope", starting in Austin, TX and reaching Tallahassee, FL, Washington, DC, Green Bay, WI, Lincoln, NE and back to Austin. We just wanted to tell the people that we love our country, but wanted to keep our Constitution and Liberties in tact. We mapped out a plan that will cover an average of 26.5 miles per day, or a little over a marathon per day. The event starts on Jan. 1, 2008 and ends on July 4, 2008.

One by one, people were requesting more information. They wanted to understand what we were doing and why. We were getting emails like crazy. Then one night, a guy from Seattle called and gave us a great idea. He said, "Why don't you make each leg of the star, a certain project?". I feel to my knees. What a great idea! We talked for about 3 hours and came up with a plan. Each leg of the star will represent a project or an issue that our country is facing today. We thought of the 10 toughest issues. The first leg, from Austin to Memphis will be the Awareness Project, talking about health care issues, 9/11 issues, etc. The second leg from Memphis to Tallahassee will be the Civil Rights Project, the third leg will be a Veteran's Project and so on. At each point of the STAR, we are going to hold a rally to discuss our problems within these legs. We are going to let ALL people get a chance to speak, no matter if you are a liberal, conservative, green, yellow, purple or whatever...you get a chance to say something. This is a platform for everyone!

By the time I got our new idea on MySpace, people are flocking to it like crazy! Our page is generating 300+ friend requests per day. We are receiving 200 emails a day! We are being contacted by filmmakers that want to do a documentary and go the whole trip with us (one guy is from the UK). Bands are contacting us about playing at our rallies. One artist wrote us a song, just for the LibertyWalk2008 event. Dozens of radio hosts and TV pod casts were contacting us as well. We have a list of around 600 people that will be marching with us, volunteering with us, and 20+ people will be walking the entire trip with us too. We have a biker gang that wants to pass out water bottles and pick up trash. We have a company that wants to ride with us and interview people the whole way! We have a book author that has contacted us. This event turned into a monster overnight!

Since March 1st, around the time we changed our idea to a more open forum, we have received the support of many, many people. People all over the nation and all over the world. Now, the LibertyWalk is turning into a non-profit organization, where we can put the money back into community centers, feed the poor, and assist our veterans! We have Board Members, Committee Members and volunteers signing up everyday! We have already been on two radio stations and have reserved dates with more from Portland, Madison, New York, Florida, Seattle, and Texas. We have been in contact with very well known individuals about speaking at our events.

It is going nuts right before our eyes!

Now, we have been asked to fly to Seattle to attend a conference and meet with Sponsors and Donors. We have been contacted by shoe companies and many others.

Planning has gone from the two of us walking by ourselves to a MONSTER task and in just 45 days! Can you imagine how much support we will have by the time we begin? We have city planners on board, logistic specialists, fitness experts, advertising/marketing people, and web designers working with us. We have also decided to make this the biggest VOTER REGISTRATION turnout in the history of the United States, by having everyone we run into, register to vote.

We know the event will only get bigger by the day and we are preparing for it. There is a lot of work ahead, but with patriots like yourself, we know we can accomplish our goal. We want to bring awareness of the hard issues to everyone, the whole country. We know that we will not be walking on the west coast, but we want the support of everyone. We have already been discussing the possibility of a LibertyWalk2009 event on the west coast next year, and perhaps an AfricaWalk, a EuropeWalk, or even a GlobalWalk.

This is a dream come true for us. It was simply a little walk for two people. Now it has turned out to be a walk for all Americans!

Let's get everyone involved during an election year! Please tell as many people as you can about our project. We will need the help of all of you!

Yours very truly,

Cody and Heather Lunsford
