Political Quotes Come To Life Thread

My head hurts. Probably from banging it against the wall.

And that was before I read the news today, oh boy.

I think it’s time for some wisdom from the elders, or youngers, or wherever you can find it.

Post your favorite political/philosophical type quote on this thread, and maybe what made you think of that quote today.

I’ll start: * “In such a world of conflict, a world of victims and executioners, it is the job of thinking people, not to be on the side of the executioners.” Albert Camus*

Inspiration for that quote: Nancy Pelosi repeating Republican Talking Points about leaving Iraq “responsibly”, while managing to imply that the ones who are and have acted irresponsibly in Iraq are the anti-war folks:

“We have to make responsible decisions in the Congress that are not driven by the dissatisfaction of anybody who wants the war to end tomorrow,” Pelosi told the gathering at the Sofitel, arranged by the Christian Science Monitor.

Oy.

How about you?

Casey,

Mine was inspired by Pelosi as well. My high hopes have been dashed, and I fear the dems look so weak right now, in trying to look "strong" , that we will once again lose the majority.

Nancy P is a disappointment.

I am beyond disappointed. I am offended.

And yet, I see, firsthand, how deeply "off" the Members are: they run around inside those buildings and they think they are getting the picture, but they are only getting the picture they are being sold.

It is going to take some mighty in-your-face messaging to get them to understand what they do not know.

Any ideas?

OK, since everyone is quiet, here's another one, inspired both by Yoko's imagine peace tower, and by the CODE PINK border situation today:

Imagine all the people
living life in peace
You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you'll
join us,
and the world will live
as one.

"And now am I, if a [wo]man should speak truly, little better than one of the wicked."
Shakespeare: King Henry IV. Part I, Act I, Sc. II

Pelosi has been such a dreadful disappointment to the entire world. We had high hopes from a woman placed - with great trust - in such a role. Taking impeachment OFF the table at such an early stage, she announced to the world that she was certainly one of the wicked.

This is most frustrating because she's a Dem. How can people turn out and vote now? Her lies (and ambitions) (and financial security) have been exposed for all to see.

How long did it take Bush to convince people to leave Afghanistan and invade another country? What about Myanmar - for the last 20 years? Mind you, I wouldn't want Bush in charge of the bombing in Myanmar - it would be goodnight to all monks then.

As one of the Repubs - Paul I think - said, "We went in quickly. We will leave quickly." The Iraqi people want their country back. The American military want their country back. The American and Australian mercenaries don't want to give back their country. They've more fortunes to make by raiding houses and killing the unarmed.

Karen - Bomb Harvest - the documentary movie about disarming bombs in Laos would be a great experience for them. And the children who go out scavenging for scrap metal to sell.

War doesn't end when the invaders leave - it goes on and on - generation after generation.

Our favorite:

"The moral test of a government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life - the children; the twilight of life - the elderly; and the shadows of life - the sick, the needy and the handicapped."

Hubert Humphrey
US VP 1965-1969

That Humphrey quote was something I heard from my first Department Chair in Speech and Hearing. I have never forgotten.

Great quote abqjohn. I sent it to our Prime Minister-In-Waiting to use as a gauge on the value of our current PM-In-Leaving.

Good one, ABQJohn, a quote that is so opposite of the prevailing neocon thinking today.
