DCP's Own KB on Hardball

Kudos for DCP's very own Karen Bradley, who appeared on Hardball yesterday to analyze the movement styles of the Republican candidates in the last Republican debate. (Karen was joined by fellow movement analyst Karen Studd.) Together, the two candidates walked through clips of Romney and Thompson, Huckabee, and Guiliani, highlighting strengths and weaknesses in their movement profiles. Both Karens agreed that if they didn't know anything about any of the candidates and were just reviewing their movements for the first time, Huckabee had the most integrated movements. (Karen was telling me that Huckabee was the candidate to watch last summer, based on this movement analysis, at a time when he appeared to be stuck firmly at the back of the pack.)

Both Karens hold professional degrees as Certified Movement Analysts, through a program run by LIMS, the Laban-Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies, in New York.

To see Karen at work, go to Hardball's video highlight page, and click on "debate body language."

Karen, I tried to see this, but it's not available on my Mac browser. However - it is available on the latest Firefox with Mac OS tiger+. I have those. It IS available - audio only. This didn't bother me when I couldn't see the advertisement - but your expertise on body language really does need the visual cues I thought.

Oh well. What can you tell me about John Howard's posture when he finally accepted that he, a sitting (for 10 long years) PM was tossed aside for the lively and intelligent Maxine McKew.

Of course that hasn't been the discourse over this picture - rather - is Maxine wearing knickers? Really! Men and brains! No wonder a so-called successful Prime Minister lost if this is the photo on which to pile the bullsh*t of criticism.

Like those of his party who said that "Julia Gillard, acting Prime Minister of Australia yesterday and today, is barren and would be totally unsuited to such an important position.

Karen - do you have a word or two? The picture speaks volumes to me. And Maxine has the posture of the greatest victory in the land for that election.

I'm at home so can't double-check this but I believe I got the same message and was able to do a "search" on the page with videos and see it.

Mitt continues to look grim, wooden and uncertain. His hair looks "artificially" dark as if he applied a thick coat of black shoeshine polish. His father, former Michigan governor George Romney had hair that was completely white/grey. Maybe that is what Mitt is trying to cover-up.

I was surprised at robotic and unconvincing response Romney gave in answer to the question of whether he believed in the "literal" truth of the bible...

Karen,

You were great on Hardball. Any thoughts about the possibility that Huckabee is insincere in his sincerity?

That comment about Romney and mormons and jesus and the devil was anything but innocent. I think it was totally calculated and that seems to go against his body language.

That's scary - I think.

Hello!

Just got back from seeing The Golden Compass with Larry (home from college!) so just catching up here...

On Howard: Appears avoidant, for sure! However, movement analysis is exactly that--MOVEMENT analysis. I'd need to see the moment before the photo and the moment afterwards to say what I see.

(It is the CHANGING movement patterns that reveal who we are, not the static positions).

On Huckabee's sincerity (or IN-): Again, I'd have to see the moment when he said it. No one is 100% consistent and that's actually a good thing--humans need to be a little more adaptable to various situations. I am sure Mike Huckabee has moments of deep insincerity and possibly even temper tantrums, glum days, etc. But he is connecting with Iowans in a big way--in the moment and on the spot--and that is contributable to his ability to authentically attune to and with them.

That said, I am sure he can calculate and possibly even err in his judgement. But as we have pointed out, in electoral politics, the candidates have to learn and those who do have a better chance of winning. Huckabee can connect well. Can he also LEARN well?

Karen,

I read the piece in the WaPo and watched the clip (Woz, I use Mac OS 10.5.1 on an intel macbook, and was able to watch the clip). This *is* a fascinating topic. I was a psychology major in college. There truly are rapidly changing dynamics when one considers the multitude of senses that are processing information to engender an opinion.

Congratulations to you and Karen. It is rare for me to witness Chris Matthews actually humbled by his guests. The last time I saw him like that was when his wife interviewed him (no comment).

Woz, your comment about men, ........all I can say is I know we have other things on our mind...................................................................like sports.

I should have said "synapses" and not senses.

I meant "synapses", not senses.

that too........oops, something misfired.....my head is hanging in shame.

Karen said:

oncall, the senses ARE involved in nonverbal analysis--including odors, tastes, and kinesthetic cues.

SO you can raise that head, (as Fred Thompson needs to do as well!) and hold it high (as Mitt does, relentlessly). But don't forget to accomodate as Mike Huckabee does, or you may find yourself as dismissed as Rudy Giuliano's charges!
