It's A Beautiful Day
This is dedicated to Dick and Karen and all former Kerry bloggers and past, current and future backers and nostalgics alike. It's dedicated to everyone who has stuck with Democracy Cell Project or who peeks in now and then when not too busy and lurkers and even trolls!
There was a time when some of us could not listen to this song without crying. & recently I was very pissed to hear that the McCain campaign was using it, just as they have with Heart, Springsteen, Mellencamp, Jackson Browne and others who had to tell them to back off.
"It's a Beautiful Day" was John Kerry's campaign song. It was playing at Obama's speech in Minneapolis when he accepted the nomination. It has resurfaced from time to time, though "Signed, Sealed and Delivered" was probably the song most associated with the Obama campaign.
John Kerry worked hard and came close and probably should have won. He encouraged Obama to speak at the DNC and around that time people would comment that Barack was presidential quality material. I liked several of the candidates, for various reasons. I felt burned by the last two elections so did not want to become passionately involved or commit til I had to.
When Kerry and Kennedy endorsed Barack, I became curious enough to read his books. I also watched my son and his friends (it was my son who first convinced me to support Kerry when Dean was the favorite.)
Through all of this was woven this song by U2 and I'm sure most of us have many memories associated with it and now we have even more!

It's such an emotional time. People who have been wrung dry by the past 8 years can dare to look into the sunshine and smile. Barack Obama and his family need a break together and away from all for as long as possible - hopefully for more than 24 hours.
There is a workload coming for them that they had no idea was so heavy. Theirs will be heavier than any new president has had to face in my past. (imv) They need to rest up completely before getting into it. I hope they can vanish off the radar completely for a few days at least.
The Obamas and the Bidens. What a beautiful lot of people to lead your country. Emotional. I'm grateful to have lived to see such times. To hear such beautiful voices pierce through the hate and fear mongering and greed and selfish abandonment. There certainly is a reason to hope now.
I don't think Obama gets vacation - he was taken by limo to work out in Chicago and he is already having briefings on intelligence daily by the CIA plus working with his transition team and assembling his cabinet.
Already the stock market went up yesterday and back down today and the television titles appear as though they try to link it to him somehow, even though I watch carefully and it has much more to do with things like Consumer Price Index.

re: blaming Obama for the stock market downturn
that's such a lowball tactic. Even the Republican puppet corporate media here in South Korea won't go that low. They correctly report that Obama is a positive, and what drags the market down is the awful-looking economic indicators.
But you know what? The Korean-Americans will still blame it all on the socialist policies of the Clinton era. And I bet they are very triumphant about getting gay marriage banned in California while at it.
Yes. seeing the U2 is bitter sweet. I really agreed with Mark from Iowa's diary the other day. And this and Obama's use of U2 makes me think that it was purposely suppose to be a continuity of Kerry's agenda in 2004.
It's certainly NOT a beautiful day for me, and for any Californian who thought better of their state.
I have closed my Hotmail email address.
Hotmail and MSNBC were flooding my computer screen with incessant Yes on 8 (California's gay marriage ban) ads, even though I am using a Korean IP address. This is unacceptable.
All my email will only be accepted at skinnylawyer (at) gmail dot com.
And while I certainly don't look forward to returning to my pathetic state now, I do look forward to returning in the first few days of the Obama Presidency - if only to get rid of my little Nazi (AKA my BMW).
