Kerry on Obama Nobel Peace Prize

“I congratulate President Obama on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. This is an honor of the highest magnitude and all Americans should be proud of this recognition. Since his inauguration, President Obama has taken great strides to elevate America’s standing in the world. Under President Obama, America has returned to its true spirit and core values – global engagement, alliance-building, and respect for international human rights and treaties. The Nobel Committee and the world have taken note of America’s renewed commitment to responsible leadership.”

DiAnne, I feel really sorry that this award to Obama has been made at this time. It gives too much opportunity for ridicule regardless of the support of those of us who believe that he will certainly be worthy of such an award in the future. Obama doesn't need his back-stabbers to be fed such ammunition. He knows, and we know, that his achievements are still in his head and will not materialise for some time, if at all.

I believe that Afghanistan was as big a mistake as Iraq and yet Obama doesn't seem to realise that. Not a single nation has succeeded in Afghanistan. We can blame Pakistan and any other neighbour for our failure. We can even blame NATO for not providing enough military. How can a peace prize go to the leader of an invading military? The timing is all wrong and can only detract from Obama's grander plans. While every single day new Taliban support emerges from the Afghani populous, Obama's goals diminish further.

None of this has anything whatsoever to do with 9/11. That just provided the excuse at the beginning.

I've no doubt that Obama would have won such a prize before his presidency is over - but this award at this time has lessened the credibility and value of the prize. It's kind of like testing kids in schools and the teachers teaching to the tests. Obama is now expected to perform to the prize. Impossible. While still an invading force and not planning to end the invasion any time soon. Hopeless.

Nobel jury speaks out in defense of Obama prize

By IAN MacDOUGALL and KARL RITTER (AP) – 6 hours ago

OSLO — One judge noted with surprise that President Barack Obama "didn't look particularly happy" at being named the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Another marveled at how critics could be so patronizing.

In a rare public defense of a process normally shrouded in secrecy, four of the Nobel jury's five judges spoke out Tuesday about a selection they said was both merited and unanimous.

To those who say a Nobel is too much too soon in Obama's young presidency, "We simply disagree ... He got the prize for what he has done," committee chairman Thorbjorn Jagland told The Associated Press by telephone from Strasbourg, France, where he was attending meetings of the Council of Europe.

Forget the Oscars, and the Emmys – it's for a bunch of people that don't work for a living, but an award worth following is the Nobel Prizes, and this year's Nobel Prize winner for literature is Herta Müller. Frau Müller was born to German parents in Romania, and studied Romanian Literature and German Studies at university. She lived through the post World War 2 period, in which a communist regime ruled Romania, and was noted for refusing to cooperate with the state secret police. She began novels, eventually moved to Germany, and began publishing more works. She was selected to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature for 2009 – which comes with a hefty grant of faxless payday loans.
